What my sock drawer says about me…
Short socks.
Lots of short socks.
A few wool ones.
Compression socks tucked in the back.
For me, socks have never been fashion.
They are function. They are survival. They are strategy.
I went shopping the other day because I needed boot socks.
I realized I did not own any anymore.
Years ago we made little boot toppers out of thrifted sweater sleeves so I could wear ankle socks and still get that cute knee slouch look.
Why?
Because sometimes getting socks on and off is its own battle.
Limited mobility in my knees means bending is hard.
Limited dexterity in my hands means gripping is hard.
Inflammation means some days everything is hard.
So I wear ankle socks about 90 percent of the time.
Compression socks when I am traveling or on my feet all day.
And ankle socks are the easiest to get on and off.
But now even those are stretched out.
They slide down inside my boots.
It is annoying.
It is embarrassing.
And it hit me:
How pathetic, right?
You help people transform their health and you struggle with your own socks?
What a loser.
That voice is loud.
That tug of opposites is real.
But then I slow down and shift the lens.
My walk, slow and painful and imperfect, is the very thing that lets me understand someone else’s hopeless moment.
It is why I can sit with someone who feels stuck.
It is why I can talk about resilience without pretending it is easy.
There are many things I cannot do.
But I can persevere.
I can adapt.
I can find compassion in places most people never see.
And because of that, I can help.
