Please look at this program started by a member of the Minority Female Doctor's Consortium (Shaakira Akbar, Ph.D):

Black Boys Read (c) is a summer reading program for African American boys ages 12 - 16. These boys will read 10 books during the summer months. The program begins on the last day of school, May 29, 2015 and ends the Friday before the first day of school July 31, 2015. The boys will read 10 books geared toward young black men. The books are (Malcolm X, Letters to a Young Black Brother, Monster, The Pact, The Black Male Handbook, Visions for Black Men and other exciting titles). The boys will earn $25.00 per completed book. The book will be deemed complete once they complete the book, retrieve their book quiz, and submit the quiz having to earn 80% or better to earn the $25.00.

The point of this program is to get African American boys reading, while getting some money into the pockets of this demographic. These boys often want the latest sneakers and the latest video games, but they are too young to work. By the end of the summer these boys will be awarded their $250.00 (or the amount that they earn based on reading and sponsorships) at a culminating luncheon. The luncheon will feature an inspirational male speaker. This luncheon will honor these boys and their accomplishments.

We will need sponsors to fund the boys reading prize money, as well as the books and luncheon for this program. This program is hosted this year by The Transformation Professionals. You may go to their website to apply for this program or to donate. The website is www.transformationprofessionals.org. Click on the programs tab. The application will be active on Monday May 11, 2015.

This is a program that we believe in whole-heartedly. This program is in its beginning phases and is expected to grow immensely. Please take this opportunity to become a part of this movement to get books into the hands of out youth. Books that will enlighten them and allow them to see like through the perspective of what they will soon become...successful black men!!
