“If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!”
-from: “If—“ by Rudyard Kipling
When thinking about our friend, Marc Collier, I am reminded of Rudyard Kipling’s advice to his son — treat everyone the same. Mr. Collier did just that, and his curiosity, genuineness, and humor bought him countless friends. As our CTAE director, he remained a close friend to our high school counseling team while he quietly labored for years to establish our new College and Career Academy. He often sought input from us when making decisions that impacted students, and he connected us to his vast network of local business people so that we could, in turn, connect students with information and opportunities. He shared our department’s commitment to equity for students and constantly sought out ways to raise people up to standards that, perhaps, they did not even think possible…but he knew it all along. He certainly built a legacy, and we are honored to help carry it forward.
Over the weekend, we lost a legend in our Canes community. Marc Collier, who unexpectedly passed away this past Sunday, left a legacy of caring for people, building strong connections, and supporting dynamic pathways for student success. He served the students and staff of Cartersville City Schools with true dedication and heart in a number of roles. He first joined CCS in 2006 as a teacher at Cartersville High School, where he later served as a coach, administrative assistant, and CTAE director. Over the past several years, Marc continued to serve our district as the CTAE director and, more recently, added the role of CEO for our newly established College and Career Academy (CCCA).
Marc genuinely cared for people, and there are countless stories of the impact he made on the lives of students during his 27 years in education. Through his seemingly endless network of friends and community members, CCS gained access to important partners and a wide range of support, especially in our CTAE and STEAM efforts. While we are shocked and saddened by Marc’s passing, we know that his work in overseeing the expansion of our CTAE programs and development of the CCCA will continue to leave a legacy of opportunities and options for students.
Whether it was standing in the end zone on Friday nights at Weinman Stadium or visiting local industry to develop meaningful partnerships, Marc was an ardent cheerleader for our Canes. He will be missed.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Marc’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Rising Sophomores & Rising Juniors,
Are You Interested In Youth Leadership Bartow?
Youth Leadership Bartow fosters mutual understanding, respect, and civic engagement among local high school students and the community at large. The program is designed to encourage students to participate as leaders in their schools and to continue to promote and enhance the quality of life for themselves and their communities as they further their education and begin their careers. The Chamber believes that this investment in our youth will instill in them the passion and commitment needed to further their community as the next generation of leaders.
If you are a Rising Sophomore or Junior and are interested in this program, return your application to Dr. Pinkard no later than noon on Friday, April 3rd. The YLB application has been posted in your 'Class Of' Schoology group, and physical copies of the application are also available in the counseling office. Should you apply, please be mindful of the quality of your short answer responses and overall handwriting on your application. Show them the Canes Way!
