Mr. Campbell's Biology class recently had an awesome field trip to Sope Creek, part of our National Park System! It was an event-filled morning, beginning with finding and identifying various macroinvertebrates and other organisms from the pond's water and leaf litter at the shore. Students found tadpoles, dragonfly nymphs, damselflies, crayfish, some turtles sunning themselves on a log, and even a nice clump of filamentous algae!
The National Parks guide, Ranger Jamie, was simply awesome, both knowledgeable and good at leading thoughtful discussion about the environment and how humans impact it. After a hike around the pond, the day concluded with exploring the ruins of the Marietta Paper Mill (which in its day was the largest in Georgia, and which was built in 1853!)
