The patrons of the Atlanta Latin dance community deserve immediate leadership, accountability, and support.
In light of the recent incident(s) that have come to light, Proyecto Barrio Dance Company believes it is important to clearly communicate where we stand and how we have always approached the safety of our community.
Proyecto Barrio Dance Company Safety Protocol
The safety of the Atlanta Latin dance community is our highest priority.
If someone poses a threat to the safety of our community and it is reported to us immediately, we take action on the spot, including removing the individual(s) from the event or class when necessary. If concerns are brought to our attention after the fact, we speak with those involved, gather information, and allow the individual(s) the opportunity to share their perspective before determining next steps.
We do not continue allowing or working with individuals who have been deemed unsafe for our classes, teams, or events. While speaking up is never easy, reports and testimonials help us identify patterns of behavior and make informed decisions.
Safety extends beyond sexual assault. It also includes harassment, intimidation, aggression, predatory behavior, repeated boundary violations, or any conduct that causes members of our community to feel genuinely unsafe.
We do not hesitate to take decisive action. When necessary, individuals will be removed from the premises, including being physically escorted out if circumstances require it. This is not new for us—it is how Proyecto Barrio Dance Company has operated since our earliest socials at Knights of Columbus, Westside Cultural Arts Center, and our annual Barrio Bash events.
PBDC has always maintained a zero-tolerance approach. We set expectations early, enforce boundaries consistently, and will not tolerate behavior that compromises the safety, well-being, or experience of others.
Lastly, we connect individuals with trusted resources, including professionals with legal experience who may be able to offer guidance. While we are not legal professionals, we are committed to helping people find the support they need.
