Silence is deadly.

I watched a viral video of a pregnant woman screaming in triage… and the nurse showed no emotion. No urgency. No compassion. Just silence. And listen… as a woman who was misdiagnosed for years, told to stay in my lane when I questioned my own symptoms, and survived two strokes and a heart attack, I know that silence all too well. It’s the kind of silence that has cost women their lives. This is why I speak up. As a health equity lecturer, As a patient advocate, As a witness to countless stories just like this, And as a survivor. Because silence is not neutral. Silence is complicity. Silence is a killer too. The truth is: • Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. • We are more likely to be dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told our symptoms are “nothing.” • Our pain is often minimized before it’s even understood. So when I see videos like this, it’s not just content. It’s a warning. It’s a reminder of the work we still have to do. It’s another example of why our voices matter. I’ll keep using mine until silence is no longer the standard response to a woman in pain. Because we deserve urgency. We deserve respect. We deserve equity every single time
