"Those of you who have followed this series from its beginning in the early days of the Covid pandemic will remember that I have steered away from most books about Covid — first, because there are so many other books to read, and second, because I think we all understand that the public experiences some exhaustion around the topic of the pandemic. Jason's book is the first "Covid book" that I have featured since the very first author interview with Debora MacKenzie in September 2020. I've chosen to include it because this is a different type of Covid book. It doesn't rehearse what the political infighting was over pandemic response, or what remains disputed about the science. Instead, it looks forward to ask: What will having experienced Covid mean for us as societies and populations going forward? How did it affect our healthcare, and our mental health — and crucially, what other health conditions does it leave behind, including Long Covid? "

Jason Gale is a senior editor at Bloomberg News in Melbourne, where he has worked for 26 years. He began reporting on medical science in 2005 during the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak and has since focused on global health. His work has earned a Gerald Loeb Award, two Overseas Press Club of America awards, and honors from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He holds a master's degree in health security from the University of Sydney. After Covid is his first book.
