Our very own Erin Layton, College and Next Steps Counselor, represented The Howard School on an expert panel hosted by the IDA GA: International Dyslexia Association Georgia Branch for their Teen Talk Q&A: College Admissions & Support for Students with Dyslexia.

Navigating higher education applications can feel daunting, but having specialized guidance changes everything. Alongside admissions leaders like Donelle Durham (Marist University) and Mani Buckalew (Auburn University), Erin shared critical insights to help families approach postsecondary planning with clarity—tackling big topics like self-advocacy, securing college accommodations, standardized testing, and finding campus environments where students with learning differences truly excel.

Choosing the right school for a child with learning differences is a significant decision, and we want every new family to feel at home from the moment they join The Howard School.

At our New Parent Breakfast, our newest Howard families gathered to make connections, share stories, and learn more about our community. From lively icebreakers to conversations with parent leaders, the morning celebrated the people and relationships that make Howard so special.
Families connected with Head of School Dr. Anna Moore and the Parents Association, in addition to learning more about the specialized programming, campus offerings, and development opportunities that support our students. At The Howard School, parents are true partners in creating a place where their child is understood, supported, and celebrated.

It is with deep gratitude that we honor the legacy of Jean Bowen, former Principal of The Howard School (1984-1996), who passed away earlier this month.

Jean was a true pioneer in special education. Throughout her life, she traveled globally to share her expertise, authoring publications and guiding teachers on how to best support children with learning differences. During her time leading The Howard School, Jean brought profound compassion to her work and care for children and their families.

Finding the right college environment for a student with dyslexia shouldn't be difficult.

We are so proud to share that our very own Erin Layton, College and Next Steps Counselor, will be featured on an expert panel at the IDA GA: International Dyslexia Association Georgia Branch's Teen Talk Q&A!

Unlocking potential through research, storytelling, and science.

For students with language-based learning differences, struggling with words can be deeply frustrating and get in the way of their learning. That’s why research-driven, classroom-integrated support is at the core of what we do.

In our latest blog post, Jennifer Topple, Assistant Head of School for Research & Academics, shares the findings from our joint research project with Dr. Sandi Gillam (Utah State University) on narrative language development.

Using the SKILL (Supporting Knowledge in Language and Literacy) framework, our lower school intervention resulted in:
1. Growth in oral storytelling, writing, and cohesive language skills.
2. Increased reading comprehension compared to control groups.
3. Stronger classroom instruction through specialized teacher and SLP development.

Today, our hallways once again filled with laughter, joyful reunions, and the excitement of new beginnings. The first day reminded us what makes The Howard School so special: every student is known, celebrated, and encouraged to discover their strengths.

A new school year brings countless opportunities for growth, discovery, friendship, and those meaningful moments when learning begins to feel possible in a whole new way.

We are less than 24 hours away from the first day of school, and campus is buzzing! We had the best time welcoming our students and families back for our Meet & Greet sessions.

From meeting teachers and exploring classrooms to getting a sneak peek at the exciting new initiatives we have planned for this school year, the energy on campus was unmatched.

Welcome to The Howard School family! 

Starting at a new school is a big transition. Our New Family Festival was designed to help our newest families begin building connections, finding familiar faces, and feeling at home in The Howard School community.

From games and crafts to conversations and raffle drawings, the afternoon was filled with fun and the beginning of new friendships.

We are especially grateful to the faculty, staff, and Parents Association volunteers who gave their time and energy to make every family feel welcomed and celebrated. At The Howard School, belonging begins from the very start—and we couldn’t have imagined a better way to begin the new school year together.
