The Frederick Wilson Benteen Elementary School is located at 200 Cassanova Street, in Southeast Atlanta, Georgia. It belongs to the district’s East Region, and the Jackson High School Cluster. The school was opened in 1956, and deeded to the Atlanta Board of Education under the Plan of Improvement. The property where the school sits is located off of Custer Avenue, and is said to have been where t

he boyhood home of Mr. Benteen was located. According to research found in Wikipedia, the school was named in memory of Mr. Frederick Wilson Benteen. Benteen was the son and only child of Major Frederick William Benteen, a military officer that served during the American Civil War under General George Custer. Young Benteen was born in Atlanta on March 27, 1867. The Major was born in Petersburg, Virginia on August 24, 1834 and died in Atlanta on June 22, 1898. Initially, Major Benteen was buried in the Westview Cemetery, a cemetery that still exists in the Southwest quadrant of Atlanta, but his body was later exhumed and reburied in Washington, D.C.
