Dr Drexler asked me what the active ingredient of Twelve Step Meetings could be? This phrase by Osho captures a lot of it. CL
"You accept yourself; that makes you capable to accept others. And because somebody accepts them, they learn the beauty of acceptance for the first time — how peaceful it feels — and they start accepting others.
If the whole humanity comes to a point where everybody is accepted as he is, almost ninety percent misery will simply disappear." Osho

Excellent idea to sign up for a daily inspiring e-mail from any of these great books. One has to read plenty inspiring things because you never know which one you will need. That is what they say. CL.

Our Third Book Club Meeting is scheduled for February 2012. We are looking forward to understanding Alcoholics Anonymous better through "Getting Better: Inside Alcoholics Anonymous" (Nan Robertson). The Twelve Steps has become such a common spiritual starting point for many and just a way of getting out of trouble for most. CL.
Getting Better: Inside Alcoholics Anonymous A.A. is the most successful self-help movement in history, yet it is also the most misunderstood. This book will reach out to a much wider audience with its magnificent story of human courage and the indomitable human soul.A brave and wonderful book that could save the life of somebody you love-R...
Second Book Club- Reading Methland by Nick Reding. Another lively discussion this time with bagels and coffee. (Thanks, Amy!)
We appreciate Mr. Reding's sympathetic portrayal of the people affected by methamphetamine in Oelwein, Iowa and his weaving together of the many psychosocial factors which contributed to the epidemic. We were also struck by how active addiction distorts one's thinking. How is it that someone whose skin has been burned off in a methlab explosion rationalizes continuing to use methamphetamine?
Future possible reads include "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell, "Getting Better: Inside Alcoholics Anonymous" by Nan Robertson. Check out the reviews on Amazon, etc. and vote for your faves or suggest others.
New book club started this month- reading classics on addiction. First book - "I'll Quit Tomorrow" by Vernon Johnson. Lively discussion over lunch @ the Faculty Dining Room.
Photos posted for 1st Annual Emory Psychiatry Resident-Faculty Field Day. Dr. V's team placed in the 3-legged race. She and Dr. Fareed's kids' team won the tug-of-war. Dr. Drexler's team won the egg race. Great BBQ, too! Looking forward to our fellows bringing home the gold next year.
