Listening to a big band play his music while on the dancefloor was definitely an experience.

I had the pleasure of hearing it live for the first time in decades thanks to the efforts of people in the swing community and a transcriber.

I see why I enjoyed Benny Goodman's music so much. There was an amazing black composer behind it.
Wikipedia calls him "one of the most influential arrangers and bandleaders in jazz history. I agree. Listen to "Sugarfoot Stomp"

I'm thinking about doing a series on Henderson's life,
he has a really interesting story that I think shines a lot on how people,
especially black people struggled during that time.

This video features clips from the 1937 movie A Day at the Races.

It features the wonderful Ivie Anderson singing “All God’s Chillun Got Rhythm”, Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers and many other talented black folk.

They rightfully point out how the black actors are portrayed in the scene. Happy and innocent. Characteristics of child. Not much depth just there to entertain.

There is also blackface at the end of the full video. I was captivated by the talent in this scene until the white characters rubbed oil on their faces and positioned themselves in the front of the crowd. Almost as if to say “remember your place” undermining the amazing people here.

People come across videos of black swing with a “gee whiz, how neat” but don’t seem to internalize the importance of this content and the context.

I saw a few comments online kind of defending the blackface?

I found a blog post asking the question of wether the scene is racist. I think so.

Regardless of it being a different time and the Marx brothers advocating for the scene to be put into the movie, it still comes down to black folks entertaining white audiences as props.

Anyway. I wanted to do something a little different. Enjoy.

This could go with some DFW swing.

How many black women can you name in the era of swing? She was a singer, dancer, bandleader and manager later in life. That’s not even the half of it.

Why do most swing dancers only know of her brother? What happened?

Although I admire Calloway’s tenacity to keep moving throughout her life I can’t help but think how much farther she could’ve gone if she existed today.
