Futures are built on opportunities. Where you go in life usually depends on the doors you choose to go through.

That’s what makes stories like Samuel Oriola’s so inspiring. A Class of 2027 Georgia State University Honors College student, Samuel started his college career studying business, convinced by members of his Nigerian immigrant family to pursue degree that would provide the quickest path to a successful career.

A summer research program offered by the university’s data science program changed everything — it’s where he found his “true passion.” Today, with the help of a scholarship supporting undergraduate research, Samuel’s on his way to becoming a professor and researcher exploring the uses of data science in medical fields to improve patient outcomes.

What doors were opened for you that helped you on your path? Was it a class or program that changed your career plans? Was it a scholarship or other financial support that allowed you to say “yes” to an opportunity? Was it maybe a professor’s encouragement to keep going, their belief that you had what it takes to pursue your dreams?

We’d love to hear about the opportunities that shaped your life. Share your story with us and inspire GSU students to seek out, pursue and walk confidently through the doors that will shape their — and Atlanta’s — future: https://t.gsu.edu/4aiF4ih

GSU Flashback: Atlanta Olympic memories! The start of the Centennial Olympic Games gave Therese Sanders (B.S. ʼ96) the opportunity to be involved in Atlanta history and honor her own. Sanders was involved with the opening ceremony Pow Wow, celebrating a variety of Native American cultures. Authentic weaving techniques, spiritual music and different dances reflected the diversity of the participating tribes and inspired a new sense of appreciation for her roots.
