Wishing all of you a happy MLK Day!
In honor of Dr. King today we're looking back to a previous feature on "Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story," a groundbreaking comic book created during the early years of the Civil Rights Movement. It narrates the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal protest against racial segregation on city buses, centering on the power of nonviolent resistance. The comic, envisioned by Alfred Hassler, was a creative and effective way to share Dr. King's leadership in nonviolent protests with a broader audience, especially younger readers. Dr. King not only endorsed the comic book, but also offered editorial suggestions. First published in 1957, the comic book has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into several languages, including Spanish and Arabic, expanding its reach and impact across the globe. The copy held by Pitts Theology Library is a first edition.
