More -at word review with the 3 year old (and his lil 2 year old helper w/ the lights lol). He loveeeeeddd this activity. He actually said the word as soon as I put it up, but still wanted to hit the light and sound out the letters!! On the last word I threw in an -an word even tho we haven’t learned those yet. This is why teaching how to read by sounding out the letters vs drilling in ‘sight words’ is important, once they get comfy sounding out letters and blending they can literally read anything (I’m not saying he’s there because we have a longgggggg way to go lol but I can a safely say we’re on the right track-I hope lol)

“People who need help sometimes look a lot like people who don’t need help.” ~Glennon Doyle Melton

🟥These 4 “D” Learning Disorders are often confusing because they don’t have a specific “look”. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between the specific learning disorder and its presentation in children.

❓The prefix ‘dys’ simply means difficulty with.
Dyslexia = difficulty with reading 📖
Dysgraphia = difficulty with writing ✍🏽
Dyscalculia = difficulty with math 🔢
Dyspraxia = difficulty with movement 🏃🏾‍♀️

🔍Sometimes we don’t know why our children/students are struggling at school so it’s crucial that we learn about these neurological variations that can affect the way children learn. Instead of ignoring the signs or placing blame on other factors, educate yourselves about these specific learning disorders so that children who struggle can benefit from early intervention.

🤔When you think of dyslexia do you automatically think of the struggles and deficits?

🧠 Yes, the path to reading and writing in the brain of a person with dyslexia is different, but that’s not bad news!! The connections they establish along that different route often lead to outstanding strengths.

✨People with dyslexia are often big picture thinkers, problem solvers, experiential learners, storytellers, intuitive, creative, artistic, innovative and much more. These strengths lead to people with dyslexia making up many of the world’s top architects and fashion designers, actors, musicians, and artists. Additionally, 1 in 3 American entrepreneurs are also dyslexic!

💪🏼More and more dyslexic children can become talented members of our schools and communities if we work not only with their specific areas of difficulty, but also with their areas of strength.

"Dyslexia is not a disease to have and be cured of, but a way of thinking and learning."

🎗Dyslexia Awareness Month is all about raising awareness and understanding about dyslexia. Did you know that an estimated 10% of the world’s population has dyslexia? That's 1 in ten people! And some statistics suggest it's actually closer to 1 in five! Did you also know that many people who have dyslexia also experience shame and stigma around their learning diagnosis? We must change that!

📖Being able to read and write with ease is something most of us take for granted. Dyslexia Awareness Month is the perfect time to think about the challenges dyslexic people face everyday, and try to be more understanding and compassionate.

👣This month, Mali's Smarty Pants Educational Services will be committed to raising awareness and understanding of dyslexia in order to bring about positive change in the experiences of dyslexic people. Follow us to get Dyslexia information, resources and support.
