What is Sickle Cell Disease? 🩸

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that affects how red blood cells carry oxygen. Instead of being round and flexible, the cells become hard, sticky, and shaped like a “C.” These sickle-shaped cells can block blood flow, cause pain, and damage organs. Because they die faster than normal cells, people with SCD often experience anemia and a higher risk of infection.
