✨Student Spotlight✨

Meet Amara, a Wi-STEM summer program scholar! Wi-STEM serves as one of our summer programs for incoming freshmen interested in a STEM major. Read Amara’s reflection on her involvement:

“During the six week program, I completed a semesters worth of first year, composition in math, which allowed me to earn credits before the fall semester. In first-year composition with Dr. Edwards, I developed stronger writing and critical thinking skills by analyzing thought-provoking texts and engaging in meaningful class discussion. During the enrichment series with Dr. Hite, I reflected alongside my fellow Spelman sisters through group journaling and conversations that allowed me to learn from their ideas, broaden my perspective, and better understand what it means to be part of an intellectual community while building habits that will help me succeed in college. I also had the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in Dr. Kyoko‘s lab studying gene mutations and DNA repair where I learned how to use AI responsibly as a tool to support my learning. Although the program was rigorous, it helped me become a more confident student and prepared me for the academic expectations at Spelman. More than anything, Wi-STEM gave me a community of friends, mentors, and future sisters who have already made Spelman feel like home, and I am so grateful to have been a part of this experience!”

Continue to picture your life beyond Spelman with these stories!

Here’s what Patricia had to say about her experience Beyond the Arch:

“Since graduating from Spelman, I have had the pleasure of exploring multiple paths. I have been the Chemist, overseeing the county of Henrico Water Treatment Facility Laboratory for the last 22 years. I chose not to attend med school, and I became an EMT and a volunteer firefighter. I have served at the Matoaca volunteer fire department with Chesterfield Fire & EMS for 30 years. I have the pleasure of being a member of the Metro Richmond chapter NAASC, where I currently serve as the chapter president. I have served on the NAASC executive board as Financial Secretary and I’m currently Credentials Chair. I have served as a STAR for numerous years. I served with the local women’s organization’s debutante program for over a decade, started the alumnae association of former debutantes, which has continued the program since 2020 during which I served as president for two years. the debutante program allowed me to work with young ladies, some of whom have become my Spelman sisters as well! Coming back at reunion time is always reinvigorating for me.”

✨ Student Spotlight! ✨

Meet Kathya, a Harvard Du Bois Scholar! Here’s what Kathya has to say about this research opportunity:

“The Harvard Du Bois Scholar program is a
fully funded summer research program that connects HBCU students with Harvard
faculty mentors and provides the opportunity to engage in impactful research. This
summer, I am working in the department of psychology, specifically within the
Laboratory of Developmental Studies. My lab’s research focuses on how infants and
children make sense of the social world, including how they learn about social
relationships such as caregiving relationships, social hierarchies, and social networks, as
well as how demographics shape their understanding of these concepts.

I found the Harvard Du Bois Scholars Program through Professor Robert Edwards in the English Department, who encouraged me to apply. I emphasize the importance of cultivating strong relationships with faculty at Spelman College, as these relationships open doors to many life-changing opportunities. I also received guidance from my Spelman sisters who had participated in previous HDSP cohorts, and their advice helped me navigate the application process with confidence.”

Named after Dorothy Shepherd Manley, the wife of 5th president, Albert E. Manley, this dormitory houses a portion of our first year students! A fan favorite for those with multiple classes in Giles given the proximity.
