Walking into this class and finding this provocation set up and ready for children when they arrive tomorrow.
A bright spot in the day. Anticipation builds, and a teacher wonders how children will interact with the invitation. Observations to make, reflections to ponder, and Wonder to access.
Thank you, Saoirse and Lauren, for your intentional ways in a classroom of young children. 🐧🌡🧣

Happy Thanksgiving. Feast on this: What if dreams come true? What if love is everywhere? What if you had all the pie and cider and nuggets and mac-n-cheese and rainbow sprinkle challah that you ever thought possible? What if smiles fueled the world?! Wishing you blessings and close proximity to things and people you are thankful for.

Please touch this! What are you thankful for?
From the Masa classroom, an invitation to our school community to add some gratitude to the thankful chain they started.
What are you thankful for?

Can you believe it's already Thanksgiving! Hoping your holiday is sweet and includes a crackling fire or a crunchy walk through the woods.

When is the last time you remember being so engrossed in your work that you put your whole body into the effort? The desire to create comes from deep within. The transfer of ideas to paper takes planning, requires decision making, and allows for some trial and error. Lots of time and practice with materials helps the process evolve, and allows for a level of concentration and confidence during play and work. Stumbling blocks become stepping stones, and viola, an artist is born.

Shabbat Shalom to this special community. May you find and sit for a long moment in peace, may you rest, so that you can keep going, and may you send your light and love out to share with the anguished ones. Those who know no peace, who cannot rest, and whose light has been dimmed or extinguished. May we, in our actions, thoughts and words reflect unto others the idea of B'tzelem Elohim. We are all created in God's image.

We welcome children back to school today after a work day in which the children, their experiences, their needs, and their rights within a community were the topics of the day. Time was spent in meetings, and doing work to prepare for our family meetings in November. Thank you for sharing your precious children with us. Our hearts are with the families whose lives have been upended and the future generations who will continue to suffer. Many in our community have family in Israel. May prayers for their safety and for resolution to all the innocent souls affected by the horrors of violence, hatred, and war, be heard.

For anyone who wonders how reading begins...here you have it. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so what do you notice? May your year be full of reading and learning in the ways best suited for it to be a life-long pursuit.
G'mar Chatimah Tova-May you be sealed in the Book of Life.

5784 approaches...how many hands on experiences does the new year hold for your child? We at Ahava ELC hope the New Year is a sweet one for you and yours, and that your child has many many hands-on, messy, open-ended, child directed, authentic opportunities to play, work, and learn.

Shabbat Shalom! May your holiday weekend be fun and peaceful!

New bookshelves are secured to the wall, and filling up with so many great books to read with children. It's so satisfying to move a project forward. What is the play/work that you do that fills you up and brings you pleasure and contentment?

What do you think they are talking about, wondering about, thinking about? Is it something they see, that they are pointing out to each other? Is it an idea they are evaluating together? Is there a question they are asking? Perhaps they are making plans, or just bouncing ideas off one another. Whatever it may be, providing children time and space and some structure allows them to explore their wonderings and develop their own ideas, as individuals and within the safety of a peer group.

Our library system is a project that has been underway for awhile. Recently we purchased a scanner (ooh, ahhh), and some proper bookcases. If you see Ms Emily smiling broadly, consider yourself in on the secret ;)
What are the projects you are working on? What kind of work lights you up and gives you a sense of deep satisfaction?
Books and children go together like scanners and barcodes!

Today's play session focused on the language of weaving. Local artist and educator Beth Ensign came and led our play/work. Ahava teachers are creative, and serious about their processes! We are discovering so much about ourselves and each other, and developing some deep connections to children's play schemas as well. Our play today was a good intro into our 100 Languages discussion afterwards which was led by Ms Emily. A huge thank you to the Donchey/Steinberg family for the Spiller Park coffee cart to fuel our work today. We are so very lucky and so thankful for the teachers, children and families of Ahava ELC.

Day 2: we started in the art studio, where we discovered that adults like children enjoy cooperative play as well as independent play. We also enjoyed a meal time training around creating healthy relationships with food. We learned alot about ourselves in the process and the messages we received as children that shaped our own relationships with food. We also worked in our classrooms and had clarifying conversations with each other around all the roles necessary for successful transitions throughout the day with children. As usual, the work is plentiful, time is short, and each day has room for both joy and tears! Thank a teacher today, ya'll.

First day of Teacher Work Week has come and gone. We started the morning with Havdallah at a congregant's lovely home. We enjoyed some play time in the pool, and then connected with the work we do through a Visioning and Values workshop. Special thanks to Rabbi Rosenthal for connecting us to Lynn, to Lynn for opening her space to us, to Jodie for feeding us, and to the Florea family for a generous donation that will help us treat our teachers well this week. We are grateful.

2022-23 school year is a wrap. It was quite a wild ride. First foray back into extended hours and combining groups on the daily. At the end of March, we stopped requiring masks for teachers and adults in the school. Now teachers will have a week and a day for team meetings, planning together, necessary trainings, cleaning and re-setting the environment. We look forward to seeing families and children on Monday afternoon 7/31 at 3:30pm, for popsicles on the playground. Come help us kick off the 2023-24 school year that begins on Tuesday 8/1/23!
