Gorilla Friend

We’re headed to the today for our third and final birthday celebration! This handsome fella is Kwanza/Kwan, and today is his 35th birthday! Originally born at the North Carolina Zoo (the first gorilla born there), Kwan moved to Lincoln Park in 1998. He did spend 3 years at the Riverbanks Zoo before returning to Lincoln Park in 2004 after the new Regenstein Center for African Apes was opened. An amazing leader and father of 6 gorillas, we know this big man on campus was treated like the king he is!

Are we impressed that this little gorilla who doesn't weigh much over 10+ lbs has the strength and determination to pull that fleece up to her desired location?

Baraka, did you stop by the salon run by Miss Iris (one of the zoo's orangutans for those who don't "know" all of the primates) and get a few highlights? You look pretty awesome.

Happy 43rd birthday, Juju!

Juju holds the title of the second oldest gorilla in the troop, right behind her bestie, Roxie, who's 47. Juju is confident and when she gets excited about food or enrichment, she makes a loud rumbling sound, which we call a happy gorilla grumble. All of the gorillas at CMZoo grumble, but she's the loudest and most frequent grumbler in the group!

We’re headed to the today for our birthday celebration! This lovely lady is Rollie, and today is her 27th birthday! Originally born at the Lincoln Park Zoo, Rollie spent a few years in Louisville before coming back to Lincoln Park in 2004. An amazing mother of two (Nayembi (now in Detroit) and Mondika (still at Lincoln Park)), we’re sure the amazing staff at LPZ made today a special day for sweet Rollie girl!
