Our condolences to the family and friends of Keith Grest. I’ve marched with him, humorous, friendly. He will be missed.

From SMHG (Stone Mountain Highland games):

It is with great sadness to report that Keith Grest passed away on December 21, 2025.

He was surrounded by his family.

Keith was an integral part of our SMHG family and a long time Drum Major for the Atlanta Pipe Band. His son, Mike Grest, is a very active member of Atlanta Pipe and a part of SMHG piping family as well. We will pass on any information about services when they are available.

Our prayers and condolences go out to the Grest family.

Good words on maintenance!

It’s been a joy seeing so many bagpipers out bringing music to Christmas parades, ceremonies, and events like Wreaths Across America. Cold air, bright uniforms, steady marches, and familiar tunes feel like part of the season.

Winter weather, though, can be hard on wooden bagpipes. Cold temperatures and dry air pull moisture from wood quickly, increasing risk of cracking. When issues appear, blame rarely belongs with a maker or a piper alone. Wood reacts to environment, stress, and care over time.

A few simple habits go a long way toward protecting instruments during colder months:

Regular oiling keeps wood nourished and resilient. Well-oiled bores handle dry air far better than neglected ones.

H**p fit matters. Joints should seat firmly without excessive force. Overly tight h**p creates outward pressure and stress on sockets, especially when wood contracts in cold weather.

After playing, moisture removal matters. Swab and dry bores thoroughly. Allow pipes time to air out before returning them to cases.

Seasonal care keeps instruments healthy and playing beautifully for years to come. A little attention now saves heartache later.

Stay warm, play proudly, and take care of your pipes this winter
