The Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award is given to one graduating senior student majoring in chemistry. This award recognizes a student who has shown exceptional proficiency as an undergraduate research scientist in the areas of research leading to publications, lab citizenship, and innovation and independence.

This year’s Excellence in Research award recipient is Anna Cai. Her dedication in the Davies lab has resulted in her mastery of an extensive list of lab techniques, multiple presentations and a first-author publication all in two short years. Way to go, Anna!

Among the graduating chemists, an amazing 21 students completed honors theses in chemistry this spring! We’re so proud of our honors students!

Each year, students are invited to nominate a graduating senior for the Student Choice Award. Nominees are seniors who have contributed significantly to creating an inclusive and welcoming community in chemistry and impacted the success of other chemistry students. The award went to Thalia Le this year!

The undergraduate Excellence in Chemistry Award is given to one senior undergraduate student majoring in chemistry. It is the Department of Chemistry’s highest distinction for an undergraduate student and honors a student who has excelled in all areas of their education during their time as a chemistry major.

This year, this award ALSO went to Thalia Le for her numerous contributions to the chemistry community, remarkable academic strength, and success in research in the Liotta laboratory.

Hats off to Griffin Davis, class of 2022! Griffin will be continuing his growth as a chemist by researching at NCI/NIH as a postbac researcher after graduation.

We are proud of you, Griffin!

2022 graduate Jack Swanson has a special shout out for his friend and fellow chem major: “Thanks to Nithin Bagal for supporting me and always pushing me to be the best student I could be. I never would have achieved what I have been able to without you by my side.”

Kyle Kairys really dug in to learn several new areas of physical chemistry to successfully complete an honors thesis in the Ribeiro lab. His persistence paid off with the receipt of the 2021-2022 ACS Award in Physical Chemistry!

The 2021-2022 ACS Award in Organic Chemistry goes to Sophia Xu for her exceptional research in the Blakey lab during her time at Emory. Good job, Sophia!

Yiran Zhang has done great research in inorganic chemistry in the MacBeth lab as well as working in x-ray crystallography facility at Emory. Congratulations on receiving the ACS Award in Inorganic Chemistry, Yiran!

Up next, we're celebrating the 2021-2022 ACS chemistry division awards! These awards recognize students who have shown special aptitude and achievement in specific areas of chemistry.

ACS Analytical Award winner Joe Ambarian made a big impression on Dr. Himes with his insightful questions and intuition while taking Analytical Chemistry this year. Way to go, Joe!

Congratulations to graduate, Yihan Zhong! Yihan will continue to foster his love of chemistry by focusing his gap year on conducting research.

Speaking of graduates again, Zitong Su is happy to be starting a management consulting job in the Windy City after graduation. Have a great time in Chicago, Zitong!
