The chequerboard is one of those amazing and iconic Montessori math materials that allows students to ‘see’ a mathematical operation, in this case, long multiplication, in action! Divided into 36 green, blue, and red squares representing the decimal categories and used with a box of bead bars (colored bead bars representing numbers 1-9, but NOT 10), children can work independently or in small groups to explore multiplication up to hundreds of millions x thousands!

Today is Pi Day! Pi (π), an infinite number discovered by ancient mathematicians, is used in the calculation of the circumference and area of circles. Livia’s Lower Elementary students celebrated the day by exploring how circles play a role in the world around them and by making geometric designs with circles. Happy Pi Day!

Each year, Springmont encourages Primary & Elementary parents to observe in classrooms, allowing them to witness the magic of Montessori for themselves! Parents are encouraged to notice the beauty and order of the classroom environment, as well as children working independently and learning in different ways. Observations are a great way for parents to prepare for Parent/Teacher Conferences and to learn more about Montessori, and students are eager to welcome parents into their classrooms!

Did you know that Toddlers are very capable of tasks - like sewing and using scissors - often reserved for older children? At Springmont, Toddlers learn to sweep and mop the floor, scrub dishes and tables, mix ingredients for muffins and biscuits, and prepare their own snacks! Completing these tasks from start to finish and mostly independently brings them pride and joy as well as feelings of self-satisfaction and self-confidence; knowing you are valued as a competent and productive member of your community is important to people of all ages!

One of the many benefits of a Montessori education is the development of calm, orderly thinking. Humans are naturally drawn to order, and outer order creates inner order. In Montessori classrooms, the materials and prepared environment are instrumental in helping students develop inner order, logical thinking, and the ability to recognize patterns and solve problems. Inner order also leads to calm, cooperative, and receptive thinking, essential mindsets for today and tomorrow.

Last Friday, Livia’s Lower Elementary class visited the High Museum of Art to explore the work of Black artists featured in the High Museum's permanent collection as well as special exhibitions. In addition to helping these young students develop observational skills, an appreciation for the arts, and curiosity about the lives and stories of all people, we know that art has a unique ability to transcend barriers, challenge perspectives, and promote understanding and mutual respect.

At Springmont, it’s common to see pairs of Elementary students working collaboratively on follow-up work in the classroom. Research shows that hands-on, social, and student-led educational experiences lead to deeper learning as well as the development of higher-level thinking, oral communication, and self-motivation - all invaluable as students move on to middle school, high school, college, and beyond. Extraordinary!

Today’s Employee Workday began with Stop the Bleed and self-defense trainings, designed to enhance the life-saving skills and plans used in case of a campus emergency. Thank you to Springmont Parent Dr. Lily Ghavi and to Richard Swords of Krav Pro for leading these sessions. Rainy days like today are perfect for curling up with a good book, and developing the skills needed for reading at an early age is an essential part of the Montessori student experience! Using self-paced and self-correcting materials in the classroom, students as young as three begin to learn each letter’s sound and progress to blending them into phonetic words. Reading opens up a world of entertainment and learning while building self-esteem and independence. Extraordinary!
