🏆 Join us in celebrating NSHSS Educator of the Year Award Winner, Dr. Valerie Paredes! ✨

A School Counselor at UTRGV Harlingen Collegiate High School in Harlingen, Texas, Dr. Paredes has dedicated more than 24 years to expanding access and creating pathways of opportunity for students and families across South Texas. At her early college high school, she leads a comprehensive counseling program that blends academic planning, college and career readiness, social-emotional development, and family engagement to support the whole student. 🌟

A first-generation college graduate with a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counseling, Dr. Paredes pairs professional expertise with lived experience — helping students recognize their potential and achieve beyond perceived limits. Her impact reaches well past her campus, from mentoring future counselors as an adjunct professor and internship supervisor to leadership roles with the Texas School Counselor Association and the Texas Counseling Association.

🎉 Celebrating the accomplishments of NSHSS member Maritza Farias Silva! 🎉

A student at Bullard Havens Technical High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Maritza earned the title of Salutatorian of her graduating class — a distinction she'll carry to the graduation stage as one of the student speakers. 📚

Her talents reach well beyond academics. Maritza placed 6th in the Connecticut Automotive Retail Association competition, ranking among the top automotive students out of more than 250 across the state. 🏆
