To the companies completely dismantling their DEI offices, policies, and practices, if you are scared, just say that. Turning your back on your employees with marginalized identities and terminating policies that mitigates the present day impact of historical wrongs is cowardice. We need DIVERSITY, EQUITY, and INCLUSION now more than ever.

National Heritage Months and Identity Focused Days are great for encouraging awareness, but being aware does not automatically lead to inclusion. An effective strategy for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion should also include policy reviews, climate assessments, recruiting and retention plans, and more! How many times do you encounter dehumanizing language throughout your day? Once you catch it, you can’t miss it!
For example:
A man cheats on his partner and instantly he is DEHUMANIZED to a dog!
Someone has a sporadic mood change and suddenly they labeled “Schizo” or “crazy”.
A person embraces non-conventional means of pleasure and they become “a freak”.
Dehumanization leads to and seeks to validate prejudice, discrimination, and violence.

The practices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are not automatic. They require intentionality and consistency. You need all three to achieve the goal; fall short on one and the others suffer. They are intertwined and interdependent.

HOMOPHOBIA is being so bothered by a group of gay men dancing to Beyoncé that you DEHUMANIZE them by calling them slurs and become so enraged that you end the life of a Black Man, an artist, someone’s son, someone‘s lover, someone‘s inspiration, and a fellow human being.
