The National Data Science Alliance expresses deep sorrow at the news of John B. Slaughter's passing. He made history as the first African-American Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), breaking barriers and fostering connections between the NSF and researchers at minority-serving institutions. Dr. Slaughter dedicated himself to enhancing the agency's role in science education and the social sciences, recognizing their crucial importance to the research enterprise and the nation's strength. His efforts paved the way for the National Science Foundation (NSF) INCLUDES National Network, enabling the National Data Science Alliance to make a significant impact in the field of data science. Though saddened by his loss, we celebrate Dr. Slaughter's enduring legacy and the doors he opened, allowing countless individuals to forge paths to success in STEM. Rest in peace, Dr. Slaughter, and may we continue to reach new heights in your honor.
