Meet Al Wolmer, one of our math tutors!
Al has spent 37 years teaching math, the last 3 of them right here with Oberman Tutoring, covering everything from Algebra 1 through AP Calculus. He holds degrees in Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics from The Cooper Union and Columbia University, but what really sets him apart isn't the credentials, it's the patience. He was once a struggling student himself, so he knows exactly what it feels like to get stuck, and he brings real empathy to every session.

One story that says it all: to help a student truly understand ballistic motion, Al built a ramp, rolled a ball down it, and showed them their equations predicted exactly where it would land.

And yes, in another life, he was big into disco. πŸ•Ί

Meet Dr. Paul Oberman: Philosophy & Methodology (yes, and a very patient snake).

In his own words:

"During my first year of teaching, I crossed paths regularly with a student I did not teach. One morning I noticed she looked upset, and I asked if she was okay. She said she was. I didn't think anything more of it until that afternoon, when a friend of hers thanked me vigorously for caring enough to check in. I was blown away, realizing how powerful a few words had been. That led to a lesson I've never forgotten: students don't care what you know until they know that you care. That's the foundation of Oberman Tutoring."

It's why we stay in close contact with parents and teachers, and why we make sure your child feels supported as a person first, not just a student working through a subject. You can't fake that kind of care, and kids know the difference.

Tutoring works best when it's not happening in a silo.

We stay in close contact with classroom teachers, not just to check a box, but to make sure what we're doing at home actually reinforces what's happening in class, instead of working against it.

Want to check if your child truly understands their homework, not just finished it? Ask them to teach it back to you.

If they can explain it clearly, they've got it. If they stumble or get stuck, that's the exact spot worth revisiting together. No quiz or grade required, just a conversation.

It's a trick tutors use all the time, and it works just as well at the kitchen table.

New school year, new chance to start strong.

Ask more than "how was school?" That question almost always gets a one-word answer. Try something like "what was the best and hardest part of your day?" instead. It's the easiest way to catch what's working, celebrate the wins, and spot where a little extra support could help before the year gets busy.

When a teacher recommends us, it means something different than a parent recommendation. She sees firsthand how our work either reinforces or fights against what's happening in the classroom.

Hearing "knowledgeable, patient, and purposeful" from someone who works with students every day is exactly the kind of support we aim for.

If you've followed along, you already know Dr. Oberman's credentials: 37 years in education, from classroom teacher to head of school. Here's a side you might not expect: he's also a stand-up comedian, and has coached both ultimate frisbee and water polo.

The same instincts that work on stage and on the sideline are exactly what make a great tutor: reading the room, knowing when to push and when to pull back. He brings that same energy into every session: patient, engaged, and never boring.

"He also has a great sense of humor that helps create a comfortable learning experience."

This is exactly the kind of feedback that means the most to us β€” not just academic progress, but a child who's actually engaged and enjoying the process. Self-confidence and curiosity go hand in hand with real learning.
