Tomorrow is day 1 for us with kids…..it’s GO TIME! ✨
I have been thinking about how deeply this quote applies to schools, especially at the beginning of a new year.
Most campuses are not held back because people do not care. They are often held back because “good” becomes comfortable.
The lesson was good enough.
The meeting went well enough.
Most people followed the system.
Some students showed growth.
The results were better than last year.
Those things may represent real progress, and we should recognize that progress.
But good becomes the enemy when it convinces us to stop looking closely, asking hard questions, and improving what students experience every day.
Good says, “This is working well enough.”
Great asks, “Is this working for every student?”
Good accepts that most people are following the system.
Great builds the consistency needed for the system to make a difference.
Good celebrates improvement.
Great celebrates it and then asks, “What is our next step?”
This does not mean we are never satisfied with the work of our teachers or proud of how far our schools have come. It means we care too much about our students to become comfortable with progress that still leaves some of them behind.
As this school year begins, we all have goals in front of us. Reaching them will require more than good intentions and moments of excellence.
It will require clear expectations, strong systems, honest conversations, and consistent follow-through.
Good is worth celebrating.
But we cannot allow what is good today to keep our schools from becoming great tomorrow.
