MSE faculty member Meisha Shofner is helping advance a more sustainable future through the BRIDGES Engine, one of 12 initiatives selected by the National Science Foundation for a Regional Innovation Engines award. 🌱
With an initial $15 million award and the potential for up to $160 million over 10 years, BRIDGES brings together more than 80 partners across Alabama and Tennessee to build a sustainable biotechnology-based economy.
Shofner is leading work focused on packaging technologies and renewable materials, helping connect materials science research with new opportunities in manufacturing, sustainability and economic development.

MSE researchers Sungmee Park (left) and Sundaresan Jayaraman (right) will lead Georgia Tech’s efforts in FutureTEX — an up to $480 million effort to bring more textile manufacturing and advanced technology back to America.

They will work with other researchers and American manufacturing companies to capitalize on digital infrastructure and other emerging technologies to make the domestic supply network more robust.

MSE faculty, Sundaresan Jayaraman and Sungmee Park, are helping shape the future of U.S. textile manufacturing through Georgia Tech's role as a founding partner in FutureTEX.

The initiative brings together universities, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations to advance textile innovation, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, and support the next generation of workforce development.

Matthew McDowell, professor in Georgia Tech's School of Materials Science and Engineering and Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, has been appointed to a National Academies committee examining future battery technologies for defense applications. The committee's work will help identify promising technologies and research opportunities that could strengthen the nation's battery capabilities in the years ahead.
