In 1992, Garth Brooks was the biggest country star in the world when he released "We Shall Be Free," a song with the lyric: "When we're free to love anyone we choose."

Country radio panicked. Stations refused to play it. The song stalled at #12, his first single to miss the country Top 10. And Garth refused to back down.

He said the line on the image in a 1999 interview with George magazine, at the height of his commercial peak, when he could have easily ducked the question.

When he opened a bar in Nashville in 2023, he made it clear that transphobic customers were not welcome.

From Terence Ng:

“I am truly honored to announce something I’ve had planned for a while. People who know me generally know that my parents were avid ballroom dancers and that my first introduction to dance growing up was through tagging along at my parents’ dance lessons. Long after I started country and line dancing and teaching in Atlanta, I learned that my dad was one of the co-founders and president of the Ford Ballroom Dance Club, a leader in his own dance community, much like I had become. It felt like such a special connection. When my father suddenly passed away last July, I was devastated. My community at DanceOut ATL and teaching dancing were among the few forms of solace I could find, and I often reflected on my and my dad’s shared passion for dance in those moments.

Thinking about my dad’s generosity, and his passion for and decades devoted to learning dancing, it seemed like a natural way to remember him by creating financial opportunities for other dancers to pursue their own learning and opportunities for growth in dance education. He danced every opportunity he had, and I believe others should have similar opportunities to dance where their heart leads.

Therefore, I’m excited to announce the very first Paul K. Ng Dance Scholarship, a privately-funded, independent scholarship designed to provide financial assistance to q***r dancers who wish to attend but need some help to get there. The scholarship awards 10 applicants $250 each to put toward the costs of registration or attendance at the convention, however they so choose. It is my hope that this scholarship will carry on my father’s spirit, encouraging dancers on their lifelong journeys with dance and helping bring them closer to the community and joy of dance with every step they take.

Please check out hoedownsouth.com/ng-dance-scholarship to learn more about how to apply. The deadline for submission is May 31st, 2026! And as always: Happy Dancing!

- Terence”

Please note that attendees who have already agreed to the volunteer work-exchange program for discounted registration ARE still eligible to apply for the scholarship! Please check out the Policies and Procedures document for more details!

We could all use some more whimsy, so why the hell not? Mark your calendars, dancers! Friday February 27th will be not just Friday Country Night at , but a Schitt’s Creek Night! No big prizes or set up: just a fun opportunity to appreciate a beloved show and the joy it brings while things are seemingly at their darkest.

Come celebrate Catherine O’Hara’s Moira or any of the great characters and moments from the show as we dance the night away! Now is not the time for disgruntled pettifogging and timorousness! It’s the time for a fulsome revel in mirthful habiliments and the juvenescence of dance, and that is most certainly our bailiwick!

Join us for a bombinating and titillating chockablock affair, sure to set chins wagging! Free dance lessons at 8pm and 8:30pm, with open dancing from 9pm to close! No cover! 21+ only!
