The thing you’re best at is usually invisible to you.
Not because you’re being modest. But because you’ve done it so many times that it feels effortless. Obvious. “Doesn’t everyone do this?”
No. They don’t.
There’s a term for this: “the curse of knowledge.”
Once you master something, you forget what it’s like not to know it. You can’t see what makes your approach different because it’s just... how you think.
But to everyone else? It’s not apparent at all. It’s the thing they’d pay good money to access.
Let me give you an example:
I worked with a woman who spent 15 years in healthcare, including administration. When I asked what she was good at, she said, “I don’t know... I’m just good at fixing problems.”
That sounded generic to her. But when we dug deeper, here’s what she actually did:
She could walk into a chaotic department, spend two hours observing, and identify the three bottlenecks killing productivity. Then she’d create a simple workflow that staff would actually follow, rather than a complicated system that looked good on paper but failed in practice.
She was a specialist in her field, which allowed her to approach problem-solving with an intimate knowledge of the clinical needs and practical aspects that support operations.
She was also a great communicator who could articulate this process to staff in a way that left them empowered and motivated to take action and outperform expectations.
That wasn’t “fixing problems.” That was a combination of specific, high-value skills most consultants don’t have, and it doesn’t even encompass all that she brings to the table.
Long story short... this built her consulting offer.
Think about the last three times someone came to you for help. Not the surface request (“Can you look at this?”) but the underlying problem they were really trying to solve.
Write them down. Look for patterns. What keeps showing up?
Those are signals.
You’re sitting on a gold mine. If you’ve been trying to figure out how to sell what you know, I invite you to join me on October 14th for a FREE live training where we’ll do just that.
