Median pay for computer and IT jobs in the United States was $109,470 in May 2025. Across all occupations, it was $50,980, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Plenty of people look at that gap and assume the door is closed without a four year degree. Certifications give employers another way to see what you can do, and a Splunk® credential speaks directly to teams that already run the platform.

Most beginner Splunk® struggles come down to five fixable habits.

Leaving the time range on "all time." Reaching for wildcards instead of specific fields. Skipping field extraction because it feels like extra work. Filtering after summarizing instead of before. Never saving a search you will need again.

None of these mean the tool is too hard. They are just the normal bumps of getting comfortable with something new, and each one has a quick fix.

The AbleU web app has a new look.

We gave the web version a design refresh: a cleaner layout and more consistent formatting throughout. Nothing about how the training itself works has changed either. We just wanted the web app to look as considered as the Splunk® certification training it delivers.

Affordable shouldn't mean it looks like an afterthought.

Four myths stop most people from ever pursuing a tech certification.

That you need a tech background first. That you'd have to quit your job to study. That it's too late to change direction. And the big one: that certification training always costs thousands of dollars.

Each of these was closer to true a decade ago than it is today. Entry-level Splunk® certifications exist for complete beginners, self-paced training fits around real schedules, and career changers succeed at every age and from every industry.

As for cost, that's exactly why Ableversity exists. We're a nonprofit, so affordable training is the model itself, and our AbleU platform even includes a free tier.

Question for the tech tinkerers in Douglasville. Would anyone be interested in a hands-on meetup where we each build a small radio that sends text messages with no cell service and no internet?

It's called mesh networking. The radios are about the size of a deck of cards, they link up with each other automatically, and they keep working when the power or cell towers are down. I've been building them for a while and would like to get a local group going so we can cover Douglasville and see how far we can reach.

Thinking of a first get-together in November where everyone builds one and sends their first message. If you like taking things apart to see how they work, this is for you.

We're also looking for a place to meet. If you know of a room in Douglasville that a community group could use for free or close to it (a library, church hall, community center, business with a spare room), I'd love to hear about it. Hidden Splunk Features Most Beginners Don't Know: The Built-In Random Number Generator

New series, starting today. Our glossary posts cover the vocabulary. This series covers the surprises.

First up: Splunk® has a random number generator built into SPL. The random() eval function, paired with modulo and the makeresults command, lets you generate random values with no indexed data at all.

Which means you can build games in a Splunk search. Our founder, Michael Camp Bentley, a working Splunk consultant, built a slot machine dashboard to prove it, complete with three spinning reels, a payout table, and a bet selector, using nothing but SPL and dashboard XML.

The techniques inside it, multivalue fields, subsearches, tokens, conditional logic, are the same ones behind real production dashboards. The playfulness is the point. It is how you find out what the platform can really do.

Splunk® FAQ: How do I get my data into Splunk?

It's one of the first practical questions people ask once they get past searching and start thinking about how a real deployment works.

The short answer is that there are a few main paths. Universal forwarders sit on servers and send data along with minimal overhead.
Heavy forwarders do more processing before that data ever reaches an index. And the HTTP Event Collector lets applications and cloud services send data directly, no forwarder needed.

Knowing how to set these up is foundational work, and it's often where new Splunk professionals prove themselves first.
