Here's a summer opportunity open to HBCU students everywhere!
The PreFreshman Experience (PFx): “Innovating Through The Power of Data“ – summer program offers incoming HBCU students a chance to engage in data science before the start of their first year. Throughout the one-week program, students will explore applications of data science and learn about different career opportunities.
About: This one-week virtual program exposes incoming HBCU freshmen to data science opportunities and how to use data on issues affecting Black America. This year’s theme, “Innovating Through The Power of Data” will incorporate research topics that solve societal challenges through data insights and innovation.
Seeking: Motivated students with a passion for inquiry, investigations, and technology.
Program Dates: July 14 – 18, 2025 (Monday-Friday) from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm PT // 2:00 to 4:00 pm ET daily
Awards: Upon successful completion of the program, each participant will receive a $250 stipend and a certificate of participation.

Jewel Burks Solomon, American Entrepreneur and Venture Capitalist | At just 27 years old, Solomon sold Partpic, a startup that makes it easier to identify industrial parts, to Amazon. This accomplishment alone would be enough to earn her a spot on this list, but this is merely the beginning of her trailblazing career. She then went on to become the first head of Google for Startups in the US where she applied her entrepreneurial success to designing and developing tools and resources to help other businesses grow.

John Henry Thompson, Creator of LINGO Programming Language - An American inventor of the Lingo programming language used in Adobe Director and a former Chief Scientist at Macromedia. He is a former professor in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts and instructor at Drexel University.

Born in Macon, Georgia, William Sanders Scarborough is thought to be the first African American classical scholar.He used statistical methods in linguistics, laying the foundation for data visualization techniques in social sciences. Scarborough served as president of Wilberforce University between 1908 and 1920. He wrote a popular university textbook on Classical Greek that was widely used in the 19th century. He attended Atlanta University, now , and graduated from , but later returned to finish his studies in the AUC. He was also appointed to a position in the United States Department of Agriculture. His autobiography, The Autobiography of William Sanders Scarborough: An American Journey From Slavery to Scholarship, was published in 2005.

Another hidden figure, now standing boldly in the light...Dorothy Jean Johnson Vaughan was the first respected Black female manager at NASA, thus creating a long-lasting legacy for diversity in mathematics and science. As one of the first female coders in the field who knew how to code FORTRAN, she was able to instruct other Black women on the coding language and paved a wave of female programmers to integrate their work into NASA’s systems. She was a graduate of the illustrious Wilberforce University, class of 1929.

No longer a , we celebrate Creola Katherine Johnson, an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. During her 33-year career at NASA and its predecessor, she earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her "historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist".

Black History in Data Science: Dr. Timnit Gebru is DAIR’s founder and executive director. Prior to that she was fired by Google in December 2020 for raising issues of discrimination in the workplace, where she was serving as co-lead of the Ethical AI research team. Timnit also co-founded Black in AI, a nonprofit that works to increase the presence, inclusion, visibility and health of Black people in the field of AI.
