I’m serious, it’s that simple!!

Before I became a doula, my husband and I visited a dear friend and her husband and new baby in Brooklyn. We came in for the day while staying with family in Philly. After we’d been there about an hour, Amy stood up and said cheerily, “Okay, thanks for coming!” And sent us on our way. I was momentarily confused. As old college friends, we could have easily sat and talked all day. But Amy was maybe 4 weeks postpartum, John was putting their son down for a nap, and she wanted to pump in peace.

We weren’t insulted, and it wasn’t passive aggressive— it became immediately clear that this was a good time to end our visit. I do think, as a non-doula and child-free person who missed her friend, I was briefly surprised and said “Oh, we can wait while you pump!” But she kindly answerAnd aneI remember on the drive back being in total awe that she could so smoothly set this boundary.
