Inside the Lesson: Singing Strauss’ Morgen — CT Flexibility & Phrasing
The cricothyroid (CT) muscle is everything in this piece. It stretches the vocal folds for those silky high notes and pianissimo floats Strauss lives for. Build flexibility with slow portamento slides between registers and messa di voceexercises — these train the CT to engage gradually rather than flip.
For phrasing, think one continuous exhale per line. A low, steady appoggio keeps the CT supple at phrase peaks without squeezing. When the melody climbs, resist pushing — let the soft palate lift, folds thin, and the tone bloom naturally.

Pro tip: Hum through the line first to encourage passive CT engagement, then gradually open to vowels.
