Bad ass Tenie B. I started Matriarch having no idea the prelude would include a conversation on ADHD. It wasn’t until about 10 years after this time period that something like ADHD was acknowledged in the medical community (APA 1968 Hyperkinetic Reaction of Childhood) later coined ADHD, about 1980. In 2025, stigma and bias towards children with ADHD lingers - but with increased awareness ADHD is now known as a neurodevelopmental condition- not a behavioral label - so instead of Bad ass Tenie B, we might say quick thinking, creatively magical, highly curious, spirited, lively, vibrant, and full of life.

For some students - especially those with language processing challenges - learning to decode words is not easy. But understanding root words can help reduce the frustration. Try the word ‘Matriarch’ Matri - means mother; arch - means ruler or leader. Matriarch defined - a woman who is the head or leader of a family. In the Black family, she is a spiritual leader, wisdom keeper, storyteller, caretaker, and provider.
