Center School Reflections: Stephen Albair.

The water pump in front of the building. At recess a student primed the pump filling the bucket under the spicket. Students drank from the same cup.

There was an outhouse in the back of the building. There was never flush toilets.

Whenever a student passed out new worksheets a strange odor filled the air from the blue printing ink used in the printing process.

The graffiti and ink stains, inside and sometime on top, of the flip-topped desks.

Friends of the Atkinson NH Center School and the Atkinson Historical Society would love to have so much more information about the history of our Center School located at 16 Academy Avenue.

The Atkinson Historical Society is seeking stories, old photographs, sketches from memory that might still exist of both the interior and the exterior of the Center School. It is our hope that former students, teachers, interested parties and their families will help us piece together the history of our Center School built way back in 1880.

Our one room Center School closed to students in 1949, and is the last remaining one room school of the original six in Atkinson under town control.
