Earlier this week, Athens Academy alumnus Safi Uddin ’23 returned to campus to talk to Ken Edwards’s AP Computer Science A students.

Now a computer science major and math minor at Georgia Tech, Safi has gained real-world experience as an AI engineering intern at Amazon, working in AI/ML infrastructure and building systems designed to make machine learning reliable, scalable, and production-ready.

Safi gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the work computer scientists do to help AI systems learn effectively, including pretraining, supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning from human feedback, and inference and optimization.

His message went beyond computer science, emphasizing the value of challenging coursework—especially mathematics—as a way to develop the ability to learn, reason, and think deeply.

We love seeing our alumni return to campus to share their knowledge and inspire the next generation of Spartans!

Today, our Upper School students renewed their commitment to the Athens Academy Honor Code during our annual signing ceremony. Following a short presentation from Judiciary Board members Andrew Caldwell ’27 and Henry Johnson ’29, students gathered by advisory to sign the Honor Code.

The Honor Code has a long history at Athens Academy and remains a cornerstone of life on our campus. Its spirit is reflected in the trust woven into our daily routines—from unlocked lockers and bookbags left unattended to teachers trusting students to be honest in all their work.

The signing ceremony is a solemn reminder that honor is not simply a tradition, but a responsibility we share. Each year, we renew our commitment to uphold that standard and to help preserve the culture of trust that makes Athens Academy special.

On Monday, Mary Spain’s fifth grade language arts classes took “A Long Walk to Water” beyond the pages of the book. As part of their study of Linda Sue Park’s powerful novel, students carried buckets to the far side of the lake, filled them with water, and made the long walk back to the Daughtry Building.

It was a meaningful way to connect the experiences of the characters in the book to the realities faced by millions of people around the world.

Last Tuesday, our faculty and staff gathered at the State Botanical Garden for our annual back-to-school party, hosted by the Athens Academy Board of Trustees. This year’s celebration was especially meaningful as we welcomed our new Head of School Jeff Miles and his wife Kiana to the Spartan community.

We enjoyed an evening of good food, great conversation, and time with friends and colleagues, along with remarks from Mr. Miles and Board Chair Frank Sinkwich. It was wonderful to have so many current and former trustees join us as we celebrated together and looked ahead to the year to come.

And, perhaps best of all, we managed to enjoy the evening without a torrential downpour this year!

After a stellar national tournament season, junior Beckham Burgess was selected to the 2025-26 USA Fencing High School All-American First Team by USA Fencing!

Fencers across the country were considered for the honor based on tournament results for the 2025-26 competitive season and national ratings in addition to exemplifying exceptional character as an athlete, student, and community member. Beckham continues to fence at Athens Fencing Club under the watchful eye of Head Coach Allen Schneider. Beckham recently competed at the US Summer Nationals in Portland, Oregon, where he continued to compete at a high level in the Junior and Cadet Sabre events against hundreds of fencers from across the country and placed high enough to earn national points in each event.

Senior year is officially here! The Class of 2027 kicked things off by decorating their cars Wednesday evening, and they definitely brought the Spartan spirit.

It’s going to be a special year for this senior class, and we can’t wait to see all that’s ahead. Go Spartans!
