UGA Creative Writing Program The UGA Creative Writing Program offers a Ph.D. in English with a creative dissertation.

The Creative Writing Program at the University of Georgia directs and supports the emergence of the artistic voice in print by offering a PhD in English with a creative dissertation. Our program fosters serious conversations about aesthetics and criticism, experience and culture, and politics and history: in the classroom as well as at public readings and lectures. Our faculty and students play an active role in the cultural life of Athens, both as artists and organizers.

Everybody say hi to Auggie and plan to meet him at our New Student Reading!

Augustine Obasi (he/him) is a Nigerian screenwriter and prose writer. He holds a bachelor’s in English Language and Literature from Nnamdi Azikiwe University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Northern Arizona University—where he served as fiction editor of Thin Air Magazine. He has received support from the Arizona Board of Regents and William M. Burke Scholarship. His works have appeared at Spellbinder Magazine, Decolonial Passage, and is forthcoming at The Carolina Quarterly, JMWW, Tabula Rasa Review and elsewhere. He writes about the human condition, myth, and the metaphysical world.

Welcome to Athens, Jaco! Come hear his work next week at the New Student Reading!

Born in Singapore to a Hainanese family of sailors, Jaco Beneduci grew up between the east and west. A graduate of UC Berkeley and UC Davis, he learned under the poets Robert Hass, Cecil Giscombe and Katie Peterson and relegates himself to the disciplines of English Lit. and Creative Writing: Poetry. He has since been published in a number of magazines: the latest being Issue 13.1 SAND THE GEARS –OF ZOOS (based in Singapore), and occasionally guest-lectures on topics such as writing, tricksters and folklore at UC Berkeley and Changan University. While studying at UC Davis, he was the secondary reader at the Holloway Series of March 2022 with Thalia Field and he last worked as a Foreign English Teacher in Jinan, (Shandong, China). As a half-blood, he prefers the term “mongrel."

Hello to Beau! Come see him read at our New Student Reading on 8/27!

Beau Farris is an experimental writer from Colorado and a PhD student in English and Creative Writing at the University of Georgia. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Colorado Boulder. His work has appeared in The Indianapolis Review, English Language Notes, Variety Pack, and other journals. His writing and research focus on visual poetry, experimental literature, media theory, and the relationship between language and technology. When he is not writing, he enjoys running and painting.

Help us welcome Shaheer to our program! Shaeer will be reading at our New Student Reading on 8/27!

Shaheer Malik is a writer from Lahore, Pakistan working on his first novel. He has an MFA in fiction from Virginia Tech and a BA in English from Yale University. He has won the Emily Morrison Prize for Fiction and a Nathan Hale Associates Scholarship and has worked as staff and reader at Noemi Press, and as an associate editor at the New River Magazine. He has been published in Wild Willow Magazine and Paragraph Planet.

We are so thrilled to announce that our New Student Reading will be on Thursday, August 27th at the Founders Memorial House & Gardens.

Please join us at between 5:30-8:30 as we welcome our four newest Creative Writing graduate students to campus. Refreshments will be available beginning at 5:30pm and at 6pm, we will hear from each of these talented writers!

Braiden Ellis is a fiction writer who grew up in Oklahoma before moving to Georgia at the age of 19. He is a doctoral student in the English Department at UGA, where he studies creative writing and specializes in Southern and Indigenous Gothic Fiction, emphasizing themes of religion, sexuality, and place.

During his time at UGA, Braiden has taught both English Composition and Creative Writing and has worked as a writing consultant in the university’s writing center. As an undergraduate student, he studied Creative Writing and French at Georgia College & State University, where he was an active French tutor for other GCSU students and a volunteer Creative Writing teacher for middle schoolers in the GCSU Early College program. He spent the 2023-2024 academic year teaching English to French high school students in the Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF).

When asked what he's looking forward to at LARB:

"One session I’m really excited for is "A Day in the Life of an Agent and Reading Queries” with Noelle Flacks Math, an associate agent at Transatlantic Literary Agency. As a writer, I’m interested in learning more about what querying might look like from an agent’s perspective, so that I might learn more about how to query agents more effectively."

His poem "Call Me Amalekite" will be published in the LARB Publishing Workshop's magazine, PubLab.

Alexander Sheldon is a PhD candidate in English literature at the University of Georgia. With a focus on new formalism, contemporary q***r literature, and close reading, Alec’s dissertation examines style within contemporary q***r writing—how new ways of writing enact new forms of political commentary.

He is pursuing LARB to better understand how distribution strategies connect q***r authors and contemporary audiences, and how viral outreach benefits independent and q***r publishing. Combining the fellowship training with his academic background, Alec aims to design a course around the different facets of independent and q***r publishing in America. He is especially looking forward to the marketing, publishing, and sales sessions withing the LARB Book Track program.
