🙌 Athens FFA's Rossi Miller had an outstanding showing at the Heart O' Texas Fair in Waco this past weekend. Competing in the junior FFA division, Rossi earned first place in one showmanship class and second place in another. She also took home class champion honors with one of her heifers and placed third with another in the premium heifer show. Congratulations, Rossi! We're proud of your hard work and the way you represent Hornet Nation!

👏 What a State Fair showing for our Hornets! Athens Middle School seventh-grader Reese Ann Tappan and her heifer, Scarlet, had an outstanding two days at the State Fair of Texas Livestock Show, winning their class and the Calf Division championship in both the Open Show on Oct. 6 and the Junior Show on Oct. 7! Junior Wyatt Tappan also had a strong showing, placing third in his class in the Open Show before returning the next day to win his class in the Junior Show. Livestock exhibiting at this level takes months of work and dedication, and we are incredibly proud to see that effort rewarded on such a big stage. Congratulations, Reese and Wyatt!

Hornet Nation mourns the loss of one of our all-time greats. Emmet Augustus “Duke” Carlisle III, Athens High School Class of 1960 and a member of the inaugural Athens ISD Athletic Hall of Fame, passed away Friday at the age of 84 following a battle with lung cancer.

Long before he became a Texas Longhorn legend, Duke was an Athens Hornet. He excelled in the classroom and across multiple sports at AHS, earning top honors in football, basketball and track. As quarterback, he helped lead the Hornets on deep playoff runs, and in track, he set a district hurdles record and advanced to the state finals.

Duke went on to the University of Texas, where he quarterbacked the Longhorns to an undefeated 11-0 season and the program’s first national championship under Coach Darrell Royal. He also famously helped lead Texas past Roger Staubach and Navy in the Cotton Bowl. His remarkable career later earned him induction into both the University of Texas Athletics Hall of Honor and the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame.

In December 2022, Duke came home to Athens to take his place among the inaugural class of the Athens ISD Athletic Hall of Fame, forever cementing his place among the Hornets who set the standard for generations to follow.

Athens ISD extends our heartfelt condolences to Duke’s family, friends and all those who knew and loved him. We are proud that before he was a Longhorn legend and a national champion, Duke Carlisle was an Athens Hornet.

Sept. 29 NOON UPDATE: What a day, Hornets! All bus riders have now been dropped off. The downed utility line across from AMS caused delays, but credit goes to our bus drivers for adapting quickly. We expect power to be fully restored before classes resume tomorrow. The city also reports that the water leak has been contained, though a boil-water notice remains in effect for now. School will resume as normal tomorrow, and each student will be provided with two bottles of water. Thank you to all our wonderful parents and guardians who responded to today’s events with patience and grace. 🚨 🚌 Just before our buses exited from Athens Middle School, a semi truck took down a utility line in front of the campus, making it impossible to take a left toward town. CR 4628 was also blocked. Alternative routes are being used; there will be delays.

Thankful for understanding parents and guardians who help make the plan work! The district became aware of the city water leak after buses were well en route, and by the time the severity of the leak was known, most students were already on campus. Sometimes life throws a curve ball, but Hornet Nation comes through!
