Yesterday was another wonderful day filled with beautiful memories and an incredible experience. The OU African Jama Group traveled all the way from Athens, Ohio, to Boston, Massachusetts, to support the Black Stars of Ghana as they faced the Three Lions of England in their second group-stage match of the FIFA 2026 World Cup.

Although the match ended in a goalless draw, we, the supporters, transformed the atmosphere at the stadium. I heard several reporters mention that Ghana had one of the best support groups (Fans) so far, and I felt incredibly proud to be part of the team. The OU African Jama Group did an amazing job by bringing energy and morale while connecting Ghanaians who had traveled from across the country with fellow Ghanaians living abroad. Almost everyone around our area joined us because of the unique atmosphere we created, showcasing our culture, unity, and pride as Ghanaians.

As a Jama Group, our mission is to promote unity, foster community building, and encourage meaningful engagement through singing, drumming, and dancing. Yesterday was a reaffirmation of what we have always stood for, and we remain committed to supporting, building, promoting, and strengthening our community.

We look forward to supporting the team again in Philadelphia this coming Saturday. If you know any individual, organization, or office that may be willing to support our team with tickets or logistics, we would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Yesterday was filled with a variety of activities. While busily engaging with other things at the African Festival, I was also hosted as a speaker at an online webinar. I had to juggle multiple commitments — engaging with people on questions about Africa and its impact on the world, teaching people how to play African games, taking up African map puzzle challenge, providing insights on the programs and activities of the Center for International Studies at OHIO University, and giving a presentation online.

It was so exciting to meet with students, faculty and alumni from Ohio University, The Ohio State University and Kent State University.
Also, I was glad I could share my insights with youth from Ghana at the online webinar despite my busy schedule yesterday.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, the Executive Board of the Ohio University African Students Union (ASU) participated in a leadership workshop focused on exploring the dynamics of effective leadership and the operations of the association. The session was facilitated by Dr. Uzoma Miller, ASU advisor.

As the President of ASU, I shared some perceived shortcomings within the organization and how the team and I are actively working to address them. Christiana Lansana, who serves as the Vice President, also offered a few thoughtful remarks.

Critical concerns were raised by Peace Nwachukwu, Publicity and Communication Secretary; Haddy Ceesay, Treasurer; Mary-Cynthia Umeaka, Social and Cultural Secretary; and Ishola Akinyemi, Academic and Research Secretary. Their input reflected the team’s willingness, insight, and determination to move ASU forward.

Before stepping into these roles, we understood that leadership is not just a title - it’s a commitment, a responsibility, and a promise.

➡️Plan with the end in mind: Sometimes the best way to achieve your goals is to start by identifying your desired outcome and work backwards from there.

➡️Leadership is service: A true leader is one who serves others, not one who seeks to be served.

➡️Teamwork and dedication: Successful leadership is rooted in a committed and collaborative team.

➡️Build meaningful relationships: The quality of your relationships with the various stakeholders can significantly impact the success of your organization.

➡️Make time for connection: Creating opportunities for members to engage informally helps strengthen bonds within the organization and fosters a welcoming environment for both new and returning members.

My First Speech – Part 1📣

At the Heroes Night, I stood on a big stage for the first time, not just as a speaker, but as a leader. It was a great moment for me to learn, to lead, to grow, and to inspire. My speech may not have been at its best, but there were a few words that caught people’s attention. I would like to quote the first lines here:

“Tonight, we gather to honor African changemakers — bold individuals who dared to dream, who turned challenges into opportunities, and who continue to uplift our continent’s image across the globe.

One may ask, what makes a hero?
Is it power? Status? Prestige? Fame? Or is it the quiet resolve to serve when no one is watching? The will to educate, to build, to speak, to rise — even when it seems impossible?

Our answer is: African heroes are not only those found in books, museums, or statues.
They are among us. They are us.

They are the individuals prioritizing the welfare and greatness of the small world around them.
They are the young men and women using their voices to advocate for social change.
They are the students working tirelessly, and still mentoring and helping others.
They are the community leaders fighting for fair governance.

Heroes are people who turn their tests into testimonies; those who see opportunities in their challenges and aspire to inspire.”
