Yesterday, New Faculty Tour visited the Georgia Power headquarters and learned that economic development is all about relationships!

UGA is able to achieve our mission and create impact that is sustainable thanks to partnerships with businesses like Georgia Power. From funding research, spaces and endowed professorships, to long-term collaborative projects and capstones, Georgia Power is a tremendous partner in helping Georgia thrive.

On Wednesday, our new faculty learned how the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government works alongside military communities and local governments to address complex challenges in Columbus. In Macon, Capricorn Studios demonstrated how historic preservation, entrepreneurship and community investment can help revitalize downtowns. The day concluded with one of UGA’s greatest strengths — our alumni. During a reception at the Terry Executive Education Center in Atlanta, faculty heard from UGA leadership and connected with graduates whose leadership and service continue to make a difference across Georgia and beyond.

Tuesday’s New Faculty Tour stops highlighted just how interconnected Georgia’s economy really is. From seeing global commerce in action at the Port of Savannah to learning how research supports producers at Bland Farms and Paulk Vineyards, our faculty experienced the many ways UGA helps strengthen one of the state’s most important industries. At the UGA Tifton campus, they saw how research, Extension and innovation are helping farmers meet tomorrow’s challenges.

Throughout this week, 29 University of Georgia faculty members are touring the state of Georgia to get a taste of how UGA impacts our state. Yesterday, the New Faculty Tour traveled to Thomson to see how the Archway Partnership helps communities address locally-identified challenges. The bus also made its way to Savannah where faculty toured the UGA Aquarium with UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant. Participants heard from speakers at the UGA Fanning Institute for Leadership, the Office of Service-Learning, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia at UGA and the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government. It's going to be a great week!

Through the Georgia Possible Explores the Coast program, 25 Clarke County high school students had the opportunity to visit Skidaway Island to observe wildlife and environmental conditions up close at the University of Georgia Aquarium, which is part of Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant. The immersive experience allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of Georgia’s dynamic coastal systems.

UGA’s Rural Engagement Workshop for Academic Faculty has awarded $75,000 in seed grants supporting faculty-led projects focused on addressing critical challenges and opportunities in rural Georgia.

The grants, ranging from $5,000 to $10,000, will help faculty from across the university engage directly with rural communities on issues including rural health care access, postpartum mental health, workforce shortages in veterinary medicine, support for families experiencing dementia and economic development through agritourism and cultural vitality initiatives.
