Eight faculty members in the College of Pharmacy have been awarded promotion and/or tenure by the University of Georgia, effective today (July 1, 2021). These faculty members and their respective titles and departments include:
Dr. Chris Bland – Clinical Professor, Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, Savannah extended campus
Dr. Daniel B. Chastain – Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, Albany extended campus
Dr. Amber Clemmons – Clinical Professor, Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, Augusta extended campus
Dr. Bruce Jones – Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, Savannah extended campus
Dr. Andrea Sikora Newsome – Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, Augusta extended campus
Dr. Gurvinder Singh Rekhi – Academic Professional, Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences
Dr. Susan E. Smith – Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy
Dr. Yao Yao – Associate Professor with tenure, Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences
“Promotion is a significant achievement in academic life and a recognition of the valuable contributions that you make to the life of the University,” said UGA President Dr. Jere W. Morehead in the announcement letter to the recipients.
“I am proud of these individuals and the hard work, commitment, and diligence they have made in order to reach this career milestone,” said Dean Kelly M. Smith. “I congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition.”

Dr. Shelley Hooks, a Professor in the College of Pharmacy’s Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences (PBS) Department and Associate Vice President in the UGA Office of the Vice President for Research, has been appointed Interim Department Head of PBS, effective July 10.

Dr. Christopher Rice, Assistant Research Scientist at the UGA College of Pharmacy, has received a foundation grant to continue his research on Naegleria Fowleri, a single-celled living organism that causes the brain-eating disease Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM).
