Most company presidents build their businesses based on numbers, forecasts and spreadsheets. Maxine Burton (BSEd ’72, MEd ’78), founder of burton + BURTON, has built hers on making people smile.

Burton was one of the first people to creatively imprint messages and images on foil balloons. From there, the party kept getting bigger and bigger. However, despite her growing empire, Burton makes sure the company still feels like a family business, mostly because it is one.

For many young people who have experienced foster care, opportunities after high school can feel distant, unfamiliar or even unattainable.

The Embark Georgia Center’s Summer Precollegiate Program is designed to change that.

This summer, students from across the state spent six days living on college campuses, including the University of Georgia, exploring career opportunities and connecting with peers who share similar life experiences. By the end of the week, many left with something more valuable than information about admissions or financial aid: they developed a stronger sense of belonging, greater confidence and a clearer vision for their future.
