CenHTRO Helps Reduce Child Trafficking Rate in 4 Sierra Leone Districts

An international partnership launched evidence-based programs in Kailahun, Kambia, Kenema, and Kono.

It led to a significant improvement in the lives of children across Sierra Leone.

Over the past five years, four districts in Sierra Leone have seen major reductions in child trafficking.

A 9% decrease in Kailahun
A 15% decrease in Kambia
A 11% decrease in Kenema
A 30% decrease in Kono

This reduction is the result of a concerted effort by international organizations, in partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone and its people.

Across the country, the effort to combat human trafficking has increased at a great scale, promising a brighter future for all Sierra Leone children.

*CenHTRO Has Reduced Child Trafficking in Sierra Leone*

On August 28, CenHTRO faculty and staff gathers in Freetown 🇸🇱to celebrate our successful project to reduce child trafficking in four districts in Sierra Leone. Joined by government officials, local leaders, law enforcement, and other key stakeholders for “A Retrospective on Anti-Child Trafficking Programs and Policies in Sierra Leone,” we will highlight what worked and plan for what’s next.

Here’s what we know 🤔: CenHTRO and our partners produced a significant reduction in child trafficking and created a ripple effect of sustainable action across the country. While the work continues, we honor all the effort required to make this happen.

CenHTRO plans to share more insights and lessons learned from Sierra Leone in the coming months.

CenHTRO hosts the final PRIF Learning Series Event — Forced Labor Among Tanzanian Migrant Domestic Workers — virtually on August 12, 2024 at 10 a.m. EST.

Speakers from New York University, University of Alaska Anchorage, and Community Health and Social Welfare Africa will present findings and lessons learned about estimation strategies used to measure the prevalence of forced labor among Tanzanian migrant domestic workers.

The research evaluated two sampling strategies: (1) multi-stage probability proportional to size (later revised to a stratified simple random sampling design), and (2) Vincent Link Tracing Sampling to estimate the prevalence of domestic servitude among women who worked abroad and returned to Tanzania. The study focused on returned domestic workers in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Collaborators also included the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Sierra Leone's government is poised to make significant impact in its fight to stop trafficking in persons after passing the new Anti-Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Act in 2022.

Recognizing this potential and working close with the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Task Force Secretariat-Sierra Leone, CenHTRO launched the Sierra Leone Parliamentary Working Group earlier this year to help support sustainable top-down interventions in local government.

In a new policy paper led by CenHTRO Think Tank expert Reuben Lewis, PhD, CenHTRO outlines 8 entry points where Parliament and the Working Group can make a difference.
