GLP-1 medications are marketed to help you lose weight, but one may be better at it than the rest, according to a new meta-analysis from the UGA College of Pharmacy.

Tirzepatide, better known as Zepbound for weight loss and Mounjaro for treatment of type 2 diabetes, helped patients lose more than 20% of their starting body weight across the reviewed studies. Semaglutide (marketed under the brand name Wegovy) and liraglutide (Saxenda) did lead to weight loss, but it was significantly less at 15% and 8%, respectively.

The review is the first to compare efficacy of the three FDA-approved GLP-1 medications in non-diabetic patients using the drugs for weight loss.

With love, from Vietnam ✈️🐾

This summer, UGA College of Pharmacy students are spending six weeks in Vietnam through an immersive internship program with leading pharmaceutical companies. Along the way, they’re gaining firsthand experience in quality assurance, research and development, pharmaceutical sales, and infectious disease research while exploring how healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry operate in a global setting.

Spearheaded by Dr. Duc Do with support from Dr. Singh Rekhi, the program marks the College’s first study abroad experience in Vietnam. Beyond the classroom, students are building professional skills, expanding their cultural perspectives, and experiencing pharmacy on an international scale. 🌏

PharmDawg Days of Summer Spotlight: Shifa Taj, PharmD ☀️

Shifa Taj, a Ph.D. student and graduate assistant in Pharmaceutical Health Services, Outcomes and Policy (PHSOP), is making the most of her summer through research and professional development opportunities.

In May, Shifa attended ISPOR 2026 in Philadelphia, where she presented two research posters under the mentorship of Dr. Smita Rawal. Her work explored naloxone availability in rural community pharmacies and buprenorphine dispensing trends among adolescents and young adults with opioid use disorder. She also represented the University of Georgia as a member of the ISPOR Student Chapter Quiz Bowl team, which advanced past the first round of competition. This summer, Shifa is serving as a Summer Fellow at the Center for the Evaluation of Value and Risk in Health (CEVR) at Tufts Medical Center. During the fellowship, she is contributing to the Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (CEA) Registry, conducting an independent research project, and participating in health policy seminars with leading experts in the field.

We're proud to see Shifa representing the College of Pharmacy and advancing research that helps improve health outcomes and inform healthcare decision-making!🎉🐾
