A BIG Thank You from our Maple Grove Foxes!

We want to give a heartfelt THANK YOU to Mr. L for taking the time to build our new sandbox, to Coleton Bloch Dirt Works for the sand, and to our amazing MGCS PTO for sponsoring the supplies to make it all possible!

It takes a village to make our school such a special place, and we are so thankful for the people who give their time, talents, and support to make wonderful things happen for our learners. Our Maple Grove Foxes are already LOVING their new sandbox, and seeing their smiles makes it all worth it!

Thank you, Mr. L and MGCS PTO, for helping create fun memories and making a difference in the lives of our Foxes. We appreciate you more than you know! 🦊

Why is there an operational referendum on the Nov. 3 ballot?

In this short video, School District of Athens Board President Angela Servi explains the background.

Wisconsin sets a revenue limit on how much each district may collect from local property taxes. When operating costs rise faster than that limit allows, a district has two options: reduce spending, or ask voters for permission to exceed the limit.

In 2023, voters approved an operational referendum that expires in 2027. The district is seeking voter approval to replace $600,000 of that funding each year for four years, which is about half of what voters approved in 2023.

The district has followed conservative budgeting practices and made intentional reductions while minimizing impacts to the classroom. That work is the reason this request is for half the amount.

Our FFA members have been busy this fall attending various events.

Our high school members headed to Madison for the World Dairy Expo where they got to network with business in the agriculture industry and various collages from across the US.

Our younger members had the opportunity to attend the FFA FIRE conference where they learned about leadership and opportunities in FFA.

Referendum 2026: The Tax Impact

Let's talk about what this means for your property tax bill.

The Athens school tax mill rate is $7.69 per $1,000 of equalized property value today. It is projected to decrease under either outcome.

With approval, the projected 2027-28 rate is $6.69 per $1,000. Without approval, the projected 2027-28 rate is $5.55 per $1,000.

The operational referendum is non-recurring, meaning funding would automatically expire at the end of 2030-31 school year.

Referendum 2026: A request to replace, not add

This is a request to replace expiring funding, not to add new funding.

The operating referendum Athens voters approved in 2023 expires this school year. That is $1.2 million per year the District will no longer receive.

On November 3, voters will decide whether to replace $600,000 of it each year for four years. That is half of what is expiring.

If approved, the operational referendum would provide four years of stable funding for day-to-day operating costs such as programs, services, utilities, and transportation.
