Owens, his staff, and students of the University of Georgia Landscape Architecture Department designed the Founders Garden on the UGA campus. The layout of the two and one-half acre series of gardens and the grounds of the former Headquarters House for the Garden Club of Georgia consists of a formal boxwood garden, two courtyards, a terrace, a perennial garden, and two informal areas. The project was completed in 1946. The rose-brick, Greek Revival style house on the property was built in 1857. The house and garden are on the National Register of Historic Places as well as the Georgia Register of Historic Places. The Garden Club of Georgia occupied the house as its State Headquarters from 1963 to 1998. Today, the Founders Garden is maintained by the College of Environment and Design and serves as a teaching resource for the university. On October 6, 1998, a beautiful new State Headquarters house was dedicated on the grounds of the State Botanical Garden on the University of Georgia campus. We are still located here today. The 9705 square foot building is neoclassical in style, best known as Jeffersonian. There is a large, beautiful brick terrace and elegant ballroom used for receptions, parties, and meetings. is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the State Chairs of our various programs, District Directors, State Officers, and former Presidents. We have seven geographical Districts: Laurel, Azalea, Oleander, Camellia, Magnolia, Dogwood, and Redbud. These seven District groups carry out the state programs on a local level throughout Georgia. State Presidents serve two year terms and provide the leadership necessary to manage such a large all-volunteer service organization.
