Not so very long ago (though it probably seems like ancient history to today’s students!).

, to 1973: the first time women at the University of Georgia were able to officially compete in intercollegiate athletics!

This included volleyball, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, golf, and tennis. The expanded program was made possible as a result of a $15,000 grant given to the women's program by the Athletic Association. The grant was intended to sample participation and interest and to see how well a women's program could be handled on campus.

For a year, the women had to scrounge for uniforms and transportation, share practice time and facilities, and wonder if there was even going to be a next season for the program! There was no money for coaches' salaries, bookkeepers, secretaries, public relations, or information.

The women's athletic movement, though in the works for some time, was sped along by a complaint registered by University students with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, claiming discrimination in athletics by the University based on s*x. Because of the complaint, the athletic operations at Georgia were investigated, and the university became a testing ground for the future of women's athletic programs around the country.
