UGA New Media Institute

UGA New Media Institute The NMI brings faculty, staff, students and industry leaders of all disciplines together.

With passionate faculty, access to emerging technologies, and hands-on learning environments, New Media students explore and build innovative new media solutions for real-world problems and establish connections that lead to jobs. All this is accomplished through two main initiatives: the New Media Certificate and the Emerging Media Masters.
_______________

New Media Certificate:

The New Media I

nstitute houses the University of Georgia's largest certificate program, the New Media Certificate. This certificate supplements any undergraduate major or graduate concentration and is a credential that demonstrates a student is technowledgable. This means they have an understanding of new media technologies and their application in a chosen field. Certificate students have access to hands-on classroom environments, innovative technologies and networking opportunities that lead to J-O-B-S. To earn the certificate, a student must complete 17 credit hours: 11 hours of NMIX core curriculum plus 6 elective hours. Throughout their certificate journey, students explore the foundation, production, and deployment of new media technologies and their applications in their chosen field.
_______________

Emerging Media Masters:

Housed in the New Media Institute and the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Emerging Media Masters concentration focuses on the intersection of technology and design, allowing individuals to explore the various facets, roles, and applications of emerging media across an array of disciplines and careers. Designed to accommodate students and professionals from a variety of backgrounds and industries, this program is intended for individuals who wish to further personal career goals and those of their employers through the leveraging of emerging media and innovative technologies.

In April, NMI students hit the road to Atlanta for an unforgettable visit to Porsche Cars North America🏁

We kicked things off at the Porsche Experience Center – touring the museum, office space, and on-site track, surrounded by iconic cars and the brand’s rich history. 🏎️

Next, students cruised past the renowned driving course to visit the Porsche Classics Center, where they got a behind-the-scenes look at how vintage Porsche vehicles are restored. From sourcing rare parts to crafting custom leather interiors, the attention to detail made one thing clear: Porsche is all about the customer experience.

We wrapped up the day with Christoph Ridder, Product Manager for the Porsche Centers website, who led a great conversation on web strategy, digital products, and how Porsche brings its brand to life online.

This semester, our Professional Networking Luncheons gave NMI students the chance to connect with top industry professionals over great food and even better conversation.

We were excited to host:
✨ Sarah Giarratana (Airbnb)
✨ Aniyah Norman (Walt Disney Company)
✨ Jennifer Strickland (USDA)

Through candid Q&As, students gained insight into industry trends, career paths, relocation after graduation, and the real-world skills that made these professionals successful.

These luncheons are part of NMI’s Professional Fridays programming, which launched in 2021 to connect students with industry through site visits, networking events, and our spring speaker series built into EM and Certificate courses.

We also want to give a huge THANK YOU to the incredible professionals who shared their expertise with our classes this spring:
👏 Dayne Young
👏 Kendall Lake
👏 Jack Forthman
👏 Crystal Ashbourne
👏 Griffin DeJoy
👏 Pouria Almassi

Because of you, our students walked away with valuable perspective, stronger connections, and a clearer vision for their future.

✨ Student Spotlight ✨

❌ Congratulations to this week’s student spotlight, Amy Kitti! From Suwanee, GA, Amy is an Emerging Media Double Dawgs student on the Residential Pathway and a member of the TEDxUGA Family.

In her first class with the New Media Institute, NMIX 4010/6010: Intro to Web Development with Claire Jordan, Amy said, “It was my first glimpse into the NMI as a whole, and I had never seen a professor truly care about their students. It was awesome.”

🎤 Amy also said that the NMIX 4012/6012: New Media and TED has been one of her favorite courses at UGA: “The work you put in is so rewarding...watching all of the speakers you've worked with over the year go up and crush it on stage is the best feeling ever."

On campus, Amy is the advisor for the Delta Innovation District client team for the Talking Dog Agency. Off campus, you can find Amy reading, playing with her dog, cooking, and baking. After graduation, Amy and her sisters plan on going to Italy for a sibling trip.

❤️ Congratulations, Amy! Your NMI and TED Family cannot wait to see everything you accomplish!
