UGA New Media Institute The NMI brings faculty, staff, students and industry leaders of all disciplines together.

With passionate faculty, access to emerging technologies, and hands-on learning environments, New Media students explore and build innovative new media solutions for real-world problems and establish connections that lead to jobs. All this is accomplished through two main initiatives: the New Media Certificate and the Emerging Media Masters.

New Media Certificate:

The New Media Institute houses the University of Georgia's largest certificate program, the New Media Certificate. This certificate supplements any undergraduate major or graduate concentration and is a credential that demonstrates a student is technowledgable. This means they have an understanding of new media technologies and their application in a chosen field. Certificate students have access to hands-on classroom environments, innovative technologies and networking opportunities that lead to J-O-B-S. To earn the certificate, a student must complete 17 credit hours: 11 hours of NMIX core curriculum plus 6 elective hours. Throughout their certificate journey, students explore the foundation, production, and deployment of new media technologies and their applications in their chosen field.

Emerging Media Masters:

Housed in the New Media Institute and the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Emerging Media Masters concentration focuses on the intersection of technology and design, allowing individuals to explore the various facets, roles, and applications of emerging media across an array of disciplines and careers. Designed to accommodate students and professionals from a variety of backgrounds and industries, this program is intended for individuals who wish to further personal career goals and those of their employers through the leveraging of emerging media and innovative technologies.

✨ Student Spotlight ✨

✏️ Introducing this week’s Student Spotlight, Neha Eloore! From Alpharetta, Georgia, Neha is a fourth-year Management Information Systems and Marketing Major currently pursuing the New Media Certificate.

After searching for a program that would help blend her majors and teach her more technical skills while still allowing her to be creative, Neha found that the NMI combined all of her pursuits. Over the past two summers, Neha worked in Washington D.C. as a tech consultant in the government sector at Deloitte. After graduation, she will continue as a tech consultant for Deloitte in Chicago.

💡 On campus, Neha is involved with Alpha Kappa Psi Co-ed Professional Fraternity, Student Government Association, and the Terry International Business Ambassador program. Looking ahead, Neha hopes to work in consulting and then pivot to app development or product management.

Outside of campus, Neha loves boxing, basketball, watching NFL/NBA games, and sketching.

✨ Student Spotlight ✨

🎵 Introducing this week’s Student Spotlight, Michaela Mullis! From Macon, Georgia, Michaela is a fourth-year Public Relations Major pursuing the New Media Certificate as well as the Music Business Certificate.

While searching for a way to further her interest in the intersection of technology and communications, Michaela found her place with the NMI. When asked about her favorite NMI class, Michaela mentioned Introduction to Web Development with Lauren Baggett. “I loved getting to choose the focus of our projects for this class. It made it so much more interesting, and it always made me feel more inclined to go beyond what was required,” Michaela said.

📚 On campus, Michaela is the President/Editor-in-Chief of InfUSion Magazine, UGA’s first and only multicultural magazine. She is also the Marketing Manager for ASL Dawgs and Music Business Ambassador. Off campus, Michael is the Social Media Coordinator for Concert Archives, a concert database for music fans. She is also a fan engagement freelancer with Something Something and a music publicity intern with Baby Robot Media.

In the future, Michaela hopes to work in the music industry for the live music space. For fun, Michaela loves to attend concerts, collect vinyls, read, and go thrifting.

🤔 Have you ever been wowed or inspired by a TED Talk? Do you want to learn how to craft and deliver a high-impact presentation of your own? You’re going to love this professional development opportunity from TEDxUGA.

The TEDxUGA Curation Team is leading a three-session course through the UGA Center for Continuing Education designed to help participants:

💡 Craft clear presentation structures
💡 Build engaging visuals
💡 Develop intentional delivery strategies to inform, entertain, and persuade audiences

You can complete all three sessions to earn a UGA Certificate of Program Completion, or just attend the initial “High Impact Presentations: Best Practices” session.

❌ High Impact Presentations: Workshop — Wednesday, November 4th

The work of two Spring 2026 certificate capstone teams caught media attention over the summer. Both teams contributed to Grow Back Augusta, a multidisciplinary collaboration between UGA and the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area.

The goal: Develop a long-term recovery tool that empowers Augusta community members with information and resources to reforest the region in the wake of Hurricane Helene's destruction in Fall 2024.

NMI students rose to the challenge and developed an augmented reality, web-based application and backend support for the Grow Back Project. Their incredible work was featured in news stories appearing in UGA Today and Online Athens.

✨ Student Spotlight ✨

🫶 Introducing this week’s Student Spotlight, Lillie Barrientos! From Monroe, Georgia, Lillie is a fourth-year Public Relations Major pursuing the New Media Certificate. After taking Intro to New Media to fulfill her elective requirements, Lillie fell in love with the NMI and knew she wanted to get her certificate because it would not only help her build skills for her career, “but also make UGA feel smaller and warmer!”

When asked about her favorite NMI class, Lillie mentioned New Media & TED with Megan Ward and Isa Martinez. In her class, Lillie said said she learned how to speak with industry professionals, craft a talk under strict guidelines, and work with a team to deliver the best possible result. “When the time came for TED in the spring, it was so fun to see everyone’s hard work pay off and to just spend time together too,” Lillie said.

👚 On campus, Lillie is involved in the Student Merchendising Association, Delta Zeta, and is currently pursuing a minor in Fashion Merchandising. Over the summer, Lillie traveled to New York with nine other ADPR students within Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications where she interned at a Grady graduate’s luxury fashion brand, Tibi, and for a nonprofit called Sharing Hope Africa.

Off campus, Lillie loves to sew, watch a good movie, and hang out with her friends. In the future, Lillie hopes to work in fashion or non-profit PR.

The NMI would like to extend a big "see you later" to our amazing faculty member, John Weatherford, and graduate assistant, Peyton Owens.

John has been a vital member of our NMI fam as a Principal Lecturer and Experiential Learning Faculty Advisor. From teaching Introduction to New Media to coordinating the certificate capstone experience, John's tech prowess and passion for student development have made a lasting impact. While John is taking his talents to UGA's entrepreneurship program, we are thrilled that his new digs are just down the street, and he is already exploring new collaboration opportunities between the NMI and ENTR certificates.

As the NMI's Academic Coordinator, Peyton advised students through the New Media Certificate, Emerging Media Master's, and Double Dawgs programs. With his enthusiasm for tech and unmatched charm, Peyton made an impression on everyone he met (and advised!).

While we will miss having John and Peyton in the office, they will always be a part of our NMI family! We are so grateful for everything they have contributed to the NMI and cannot wait to see what new adventures are around the corner for them.

We’re so excited to be back on campus with some new faces this year!

Please join us in welcoming Emily Taylor, our Event and Training Coordinator and TEDxUGA Curator! With 15 years of experience as a high school theatre educator and a professional background in theatre production and event management, Emily helps students develop creativity, confidence, collaboration, and communication skills.

We’re also excited to welcome Sarah Jones as our new Academic Coordinator! Sarah advises students in the New Media Certificate, Emerging Media Master’s, and Double Dawgs programs while also serving as a Teaching Assistant for NMIX courses. With experience in academic advising, marketing, and sales, she brings strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills to the NMI.

We are thrilled to have Emily and Sarah on our team and can’t wait to see everything they accomplish!

✨ Student Spotlight ✨

🐾 Introducing this week’s Student Spotlight, Bailey Wilson! From Cochran, Georgia, Bailey is a second-year graduate student pursuing her Emerging Media Master’s on the Online Pathway.

When asked about her favorite NMI class, Bailey spotlighted NMIX 6012E: New Media Topics with Tyler Mazurek. Bailey said the class pushed her to consider career paths she had not imagined for herself. Specifically, the class pushed her to ask questions about what she wanted for her future. Bailey said, “Learning how to ask those questions—and giving yourself room to explore the answers—is something we don’t always get to focus on in school.”

🎨 Bailey’s professional and academic experience spans two Georgia universities. At the University of Georgia, Bailey is an Emerging Media graduate student, and at Georgia College and State University, she is a full-time manager of Creative Services. In her role, Bailey helps departments across campus bring their ideas to life through design and print materials.

In the future, Bailey wants to keep following the interests the Emerging Media Master’s program has helped her discover, especially research and user experience. “I’d love to bring those together with my graphic design background to help shape how things work and how people experience them,” Bailey said.
