We believe books are a gateway to understanding the universe and the boundless possibilities contained within it for every person, regardless of their life circumstances. By bringing the world to a child’s doorstep, reading pulls a child into the world as a critical thinker, an empathic individual, and an engaged citizen. We believe providing children with open, equal access to books allows them to connect the joy of reading with the thrill of discovery, laying the foundation for a successful, fulfilling life. Books for Keeps started as an effort to help one little girl who loved to read but didn't own a single book. It has grown into a research-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of improving literacy among low-income children. At the end of each school year, we give 12 books to every elementary school student attending an Athens-Clarke county school where 90% or more of students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch. Additionally, Books for Keeps serves children at elementary schools in Atlanta, Warrenton, and Elberton, Georgia. This guarantees the children have access to books, regardless of income, proximity to a library, or family situation.

$25 provides 12 books plus a carrying tote for one child. $480 sponsors an entire class! Contact us via email at [email protected]

📣 Today’s staff spotlight is on Colleen! 📣

Colleen has been with Books for Keeps since 2022. She manages the Storytellers Literacy Mentor Program and also is the school coordinator for Fowler Drive Elementary. In fact - it’s her FIFTH YEAR in schools and managing the program. On top of all the work that comes with that, Colleen manages our social media and insists that all of us take photos at all Books for Keeps events. Thank her for all the cute photos you’ve seen this year!

🐾Colleen is a Double Dawg from UGA’s School of Social Work!
🪡Colleen adores thrifting, quilting, house plants, reading fiction, making mosaics, going on walks, laying on quilts in the yard, reality TV, making pottery, and giggling with her husband over their cat, Wiley!
⭐️Involved with the Athens Chamber of Commerce as a volunteer Ambassador & serve as secretary for the board of Nuçi's Space, and as the secretary for Fowler Drive's Local School Governance team
🏁Wanted to be the first female nascar driver when she was a kid (Pre-Danica Patrick)

📣 Today’s staff spotlight is on Rainey! 📣

On paper, Rainey is our Director of Finance & Administration, a role encompassing taxes, general finances, and leadership, but in practice Rainey has done so much over her time at Books for Keeps.

Outside of Books for Keeps, Rainey is just as involved!

📚Rainey is the current chair of the Athens Clarke County Library Board and a member and volunteer with the Friends of the ACC Library. She’s also a huge fan of Silent Book Club Athens.
🌼A donor and supporter of Sweet Olive Farm
🍼A champion of the Athens Area Diaper Bank (please donate diapers!)

Some of Rainey’s favorite things include
⭐️ Books - reading *and* reading aloud to kids and adults
⭐️ art museums and natural history
⭐️ hikes beside creeks and generally being outside
⭐️ floating down rivers and swimming in mountain lakes
⭐️writing and making things
⭐️learning new skills
⭐️ beaches and swamps
⭐️ learning about other people's special interests
⭐️ yummy food and trying new ones (esp breakfast and bread)
