Dr. Porter was at the top of his game tonight at his lecture on War and Climate Change as a part of the Anthropocene Lecture series. Very inspirational!
Key takeaways: War contributes to climate change. Climate change contributes to conflicts over resources.

War and Global Environmental Change | Anthropocene
War, and the preparation for war, consume 6 percent of all human manufactured goods and contribute 10 percent of all global carbon emissions. More than 15 million km2 of land have been rendered uninhabitable as a result of war. The U.S. Defense Department budget is equivalent to the budgets of 1,0…

There are too many issues today that involve "revolving door regulatory agencies" - meaning the same lobbyists and people who have great stakes in the promotion of the corporations also are in charge of the committees that are supposed to be keeping these corporations in check and holding them accountable for their actions. If you ask me, that's a conflict of interest.

Athens garbage to power homes
That new hum in the Athens-Clarke County landfill is the sound of decomposition. Or, more exactly, it's the sound of the methane gasses released by degrading materials being turned into electricity, enough to power 1,500 homes.

Improvements to the system made every day. Who thinks its about time guys like this started taking over?
HYBRID SOLAR ON YOUR OWN ROOF -- The alternative to monopoly utility power you have been waiting for.
Solar PV systems are great. So are solar thermal roofs. Combined together into a hybrid thermal/PV system, they produce hot water and electricity at the same time, with the added benefit that cooling the panels increases their power generation efficiency.

Now, if you can't buy solar, you may lease it in a number of U.S. states. Approximately 75% of homeowners who go solar in these states do so through a solar leasing/PPA option and save about $600 a year off their electricity costs. That comes to about $12,000 to $15,000 over the course of their 20- to 25-year solar lease or PPA.

What do you guys think?
JAPAN'S LARGEST SOLAR POWER PLANT OPENS IN KAGOSHIMA
Japan is making progress in its commitment to renewable energies after the Fukushima accident has triggered wide-spread rejection of nuclear power. Yesterday, the company Kyocera finished and opened the largest solar PV plant in the country. The Kagoshima Nanatsujima Mega Solar Plant contains 1.27 million square meters of solar panels placed offshore. It will be able to generate 70 megawatts of power, able to supply electricity for about 22,000 local households. While that amount of energy is roughly 10% of what the average coal-fired power plant in the U.S. produces, it nevertheless signals a significant shift that reduces accident risk and air pollution in neighboring Kagoshima City,.
